I've been a shortwave listener since 1975. I have enjoyed many types of antennas from long wires up to 75 ft, to ground mounted verticals with 18 radials to multiband attic dipoles. Recently I have wanted to be able to listen to my shortwave portable from my easy chair in the living room, but the feed line to my good antennas is upstairs on the other side of the building. So I either confine myself to one room or I find a way to get a better signal than the little whip can deliver.
I have read many reviews on the MLA 30 plus, some very positive and some quite negative. Curiosity finally got to me and I got one this week. I live in an HOA so I have to "fly under the radar" so to speak. I put the MLA 30 plus together and mounted it on a 5 ft wooden Pole. I wanted to try driving the pole maybe 6 inches to a foot into the ground outside the front of my house and then run the feed line under the front door to where I sit. I wasn't expecting much because it's only a few feet above ground.
Much to my amazement this antenna is pulling in probably about 10 times as many stations as I can get on the whip, or even a random wire strung around the living room ceiling. And it holds its own quite well against a multiband vertical dipole I have out by the fence in my backyard, but it is much more portable and can be put away when HOA nasties come around. The stations I always could get come in much louder and much clearer with a lot less background noise. But I also can pick up lots of stations that completely disappear when I unplug the outdoor antenna and listen with just the whip. And even those stations come in plenty loud and plenty clear.
I am using this antenna with my Tecsun PL 880 and I have found that I need to put the attenuator switch on local to keep it from picking up bleed over from the FM broadcast band. I attribute this to the not so perfect filtering of the radio, and not to the antenna. But even with the attenuator switch in this position performance is far, far beyond what I expected for an antenna just 4 to 5 ft above the ground. I wonder if those who said the amplifier is noisy, are just hitting their radios with larger signals than they can handle without overloading the front end. The signals from the MLA-30 are too much for a radio with a substandard front end filtering section. That's where the attenuator switch comes in very handy. Remember, shortwave portables are not the superstars in shortwave receivers. But they sure do have their place when convenience is a factor.
In other words this antenna solves my problem and I can enjoy scanning the shortwave bands and listening to my favorite stations with very little money put out, and very little effort to assemble the little antenna. I would suggest to those who say that the preamp is noisy, try using a better filtered USB supply. And also if you have one, set your attenuator for local operation. Once the amplifier does its job, even in this position you will get DX stations from around the globe, and quite well. To me this antenna is a minor miracle if you use it properly and do some experimenting to maximize your results. I could not be happier. it's portable, it's effective and it makes me a very happy shortwave listener once again.
And by the way I no longer feel like the shortwave bands have been completely abandoned in favor of the internet. Using this antenna there is more on the shortwave spectrum than I will probably ever get around to listening to. The bands are alive and well now that I have this incredible portable and clandestine antenna.

RF BOX gain test
It is best to ensure that your radio has a corresponding band external low-impedance input port of 50-75 0hms. Only radios without external antenna input port of the corresponding band on the pull rod cannot function properly(mismatch of high impedance external ports of 300-500 0hms)

Excellent Radio Antenna with the accessories you need
At first the antenna didn't seem to do much, but it worked very well for me once the battery in the "P.Box" was charged. The description doesn't mention that it comes with a SMA to BNC adapter which was very helpful as my Tecsun S-8800 uses BNC for the FM/SW input. Mine came with an English language manual that was also very helpful. There are some misleading reviews about this antenna on some SWL websites and YouTube. I suspect either they didn't have the manual or they were using a previous version of this antenna. According to the manual the latest 2022 version has a FMDX/HF switch which is shipped in the FMDX position. To access the switch, you have to remove the cover of the preamplifier (see attached photo). Some reviews mention FM signals interfering with SW. After setting mine to the HF position, I didn't have any FM interference above 4kHz, so it wasn't an issue and maybe the reviewers that do weren't aware of the switch. Also, some reviewers complain about low gain. The 2022 version of the "P.Box" feed box has a power switch not only turns the power on, it also steps through 3 levels of gain. I'm pleased that the antenna came with a 30 foot feed line and the pipe supports are close enough in size to 1/2" so you can assemble it and use it right away without having to find extra parts.
