The Great Gatsby: THE AUTHORIZED TEXT Featuring F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Final Revisions. Kindle Edition
Many consider The Great Gatsby to be the Great American Novel. Nearly 100 years after publication the story remains relevant, as modern and fresh as the wind on the sea. F. Scott Fitzgerald possessed a perfect-pitch ear and a prophetic view. One could only imagine Fitzgerald standing somewhere in our time watching over the unceasing voyage of his splendid masterpiece to dock at the green light of success, in the end raised from the shadowed depths into which it sank in the 1930s and now considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, “something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned,” as Fitzgerald envisioned.
This edition provides the approved text emended in consultation with the 1991 Cambridge University Press critical edition. The first, 1925 edition, was blemished due to a rush to publish. Fitzgerald was in Italy while the novel was being edited and printed, pre-airmail, thus unavailable to approve the text. Subsequent editions were further flawed resulting from a compound of causes. Fitzgerald’s intentions can be recovered from his saved drafts, surviving manuscripts, rewritten galleys and his marked copy of Gatsby.
“The descriptions of the valley of ashes adjacent to the lovely country, the conversation and the action in Myrtle’s apartment, the marvelous catalogue of those who came to Gatsby’s house,—these are such things as make a man famous. And all these things, the whole pathetic episode, you have given a place in time and space, for with the help of T.J. Eckleburg and by an occasional glance at the sky, or the sea, or the city, you have imparted a sort of sense of eternity. You once told me you were not a natural writer—my God! You have plainly mastered the craft, of course; but you need far more than craftmanship for this.” —Maxwell Perkins, Charles Scribner’s Sons editor, in a letter to F. Scott Fitzgerald, after thoroughly reading and digesting the manuscript of The Great Gatsby.
