I’m so glad someone has taken the time to collect such a body of interesting stories such as this. I’d never given much thought to the history of physical fitness; but I’m soon realizing it is my favorite history topic! It makes me wonder what my body is capable of (given the right programs/etc). The books is a very fun & easy read, too. I love it. I can’t imagine anyone not being amazed by some of this information. So worth the time to read. Or even better - read it aloud to your loved ones (or students). The book is broken up into manageable short stories, making it easy to read a little here & there.

I want to also make note that the author of the book is genuinely kind-hearted. And his personal story is also very inspiring. I can’t say enough good about him, he is very honest and caring. What a gift his book is; I love the historical knowledge he has shared.

Not knowing if I would be interested in a book on physical fitness, I went ahead and bought it. I started flipping through it when I got back from the mailbox and 30 minutes later, I sat down. I was surprised at how much I learned and enjoyed reading all the bios on historical figures and how they worked out. I’m sure the physical fitness buffs will love the detailed workout information. Easy to read and well-written, I’d encourage you to buy them for stocking stuffers for next Christmas!

Only bad thing about this book is that I wish there were more. I read this in about 2 days and that's only because I have kids and adult stuff I have to do. I wish the author had more books. Great read.

Bought this for my husband as part of his birthday gift. He is interested in fitness and history, so this was a win on both accounts. Short book, but great value!

Not really the book I was expecting. I thought it would be a book with a little more depth and a scholarly attempt at chronicling the history of physical fitness but it’s basically condensed Wikipedia article tidbits of athletes and their training modalities and glimpses of different warrior cultures and some very basic information on them.

If you follow James on Instagram, these are more or less the transcripts of the shorts/reels he posts.

I was a bit disappointed since I’m a big fan of James and his work on IG and was definitely expecting more.

Probably my fault for lack of due diligence but I am quite dissapointed. Its about 95 pages total. Just alot of little paragraph descriptions and no depth. I honestly thought it was going to have alot more depth and be more of a scholarly work. You can read it all in an hour. If the author really did some scholarly research and expanded it out to 300 pages or so it be much more worthwhile. As it is, though its somewhat interesting, I wouldn't recommend it. A quick Google search of things like "how did the Roman's train" and "how did Bruce Lee train" would provide the same info.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lack of data and sources. A few pages on civilizations and then bios
Reviewed in France on May 20, 2023
Overall it was interesting and I read it in less than 2 days. I was expecting more sources and data especially on the first part on Roman empires etc where in the end it's only a few pages printed big. Then there are lots of bio with no consistency like date of birth, location or common chapter for all people. For some bio there are absolutely no data or date or source. While I like the initiative it's not a study but an addition of wikis/ open common known data aggregated in a book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sooo Vague!
Reviewed in Canada on January 24, 2024
I was intrigued by how this book was sold by tge author on Instagram and proceeded to order it.

The book is so very vague and extremely short on details. You can't sum up these great athletes and champions in a few short paragraphs.
Save yourself 15 bucks and disappointment...
