This is my first time reading a Zak Zyz work and I'm hooked.
The story does a great job of introducing you to an entire cast of empathetic and likable characters. It's a short fun sci fi vignette that leaves you wanting more. While it's a good thing that it ends before overstaying it's welcome, it is bittersweet how quickly it's over.
Zyz does an excellent job taking the premise of a group of marines with developmental disabilities and presenting them as sympathetic, lovable characters with personality, aspirations, and strong memorable personalities. The illustrations within are also absolutely terrific.
Great introduction to the author, and leaves me looking forward to reading his other works.
As a longtime fan of Zak Zyz, I had the privilege of reading this early before it was released. All I have to say is that I'm so happy that it's finally on Amazon, because at the end of the day, this story is peak Zak Zyz: putting interesting characters you can empathize with into very messy and hazardous situations, watching how they react and adapt to the situation using all the training they've learned over their relatively short lives, just like a group of childlike space marines forced to venture into hazardous alien ships.
Like I said, I really like this book, and this author, and it shows.
