Editorial Reviews
Singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett regaled audiences for over five decades with songs about the faces and places from his lifelong journey along the road less traveled. His upcoming album Equal Strain On All Parts is a new chapter in that story as a playful and heartfelt gift to his dedicated fans. Inspired by his grandfather’s description of a good nap, the new album features some well-known friends, including Paul McCartney, Emmylou Harris, Angelique Kidjo, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

The other level is for new fans who may or may not have heard of him and his music and the album is a great introduction to them. But to those of us who have followed him, dancing as we go, this is it, his Swan Song to acknowledge that we would know what he is singing about and love every moment of it. He stated 10-15 years ago he wanted to come out with the perfect album like Carlos Santana's Supernatural - sorry Carlos, this exceeds and supersedes Supernatural.
To me, the song order follows his music order of his albums as they came out, along with being meta. You more or less need to be a super fan to really "understand" because of the sound and lyrics. The songs have licks from his previous music as they came out and as you listen you can't help but laugh and smile at the lyrics. It's one of those "you had to have been there" albums, continuing the party and conga line.
My absolute favorite is the first song (though there is NOT one song that is "bad") - University of Bourbon Street - where he first started out, busking and playing in small bars. His first "real" New Orleans song - The Wino and I Know - and those very early days culminates in this song. As you follow along, get out his early days and go back and listen to this album, you'll definitely hear the kudo's to those albums. I just can't help it hearing it.
For those who wanted his "greatest hits" find 1992's "Boats Beaches Bars Ballads" 4-disc, these songs are pre-Warren Buffett days and "Meet Me in Margaritaville" post-WB, when he started his restaurants, website and other money making endeavors.
So drink it up, this one's for you, it's been a lovely cruise
"Equal Strain on All Parts" does not disappoint. All fourteen tracks comprise a heady mix of various musical styles, delivered with a joyous gusto that is all the more remarkable given that Buffett must already have known he was dying when they were recorded. In spite of this, the prevailing mood here is one of unabashed celebration.
Throughout, Buffet's voice is strong and confident, his singing some of the strongest of his long and storied career. His acoustic guitar playing is supple and lyrical, and these final songs easily stand among the finest he has ever written, showcasing his trademark ironic humor and love of wordplay. My favorite lines here? "One day you're wrestling gators / Next day you're singing 'Never Been to Spain'—in Spain!"
Standout tracks include "Bubbles Up," "Like My Dog," and an unexpectedly moving tribute to the "French Elvis," the late pop-rocker Johnny Hallyday, "Johnny's Rhum." The buoyant mood is further enhanced by several outstanding guest appearances, featuring Paul McCartney, Angélique Kidjo, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, among others. On the concluding track, Buffett teams up with Emmylou Harris for a cover of Bob Dylan's "Mozambique," which effortlessly nails the inebriated party mood that the original track aspired to, but never quite managed to attain. Over time, this may very well come to be my favorite Jimmy Buffett album.
As the tender title song, dedicated to the memory of the songwriter's grandfather, reminds us, "Equal strain on all parts— / Whatever course you set, / It'll ease the strain / On brains and backs and hearts." And so it will. This album makes me happy, far too rare a thing in these despondent times. For that, I am profoundly grateful. Godspeed, Jimmy Buffett.
