I also appreciated how it tackled stress management and building better relationships in a really down-to-earth way.

The book broadened my understanding of the topic and has better equipped me to navigate my life and relationships. “Emotional Intelligence” has the potential to significantly enrich one's life. As the book highlights, it's never too late to begin cultivating these skills. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their personal growth and life's journey.

This is a good read that delves into the science of our emotions, offering practical strategies for self-improvement and better relationships. The author's rich experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner shines through, providing valuable insights grounded in clinical practice. A must-read for anyone looking to enhance their emotional skills and interpersonal dynamics.

At the start, SB Wade, a Family Nurse Practitioner with a lifetime of experiences, lays out the 4 keys to an emotionally thriving life: Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Empathy, and Social Skills. Then, using clear explanations and inspiring life examples, she shows how our emotional Intelligence can be built pillar by pillar. Her examples are clear and actionable, easy to implement and come with measurable results.

Wade has the reader appreciate that there is an art to empathy, to improved mental health, to enriching ongoing relationships and to conflict resolution. These are talents that can be learned and used in one’s personal and professional life. For instance, by someone who is interested in team-building and taking on a leadership role.

I thought this book would be a little “brush up” in social skills, and interpersonal reminders. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reader comes to appreciate that emotional intelligence is a lifelong path of self-improvement, rather than a static state of being.

I find in a short time, I am getting better at regulating my emotions, enjoying and appreciating my relationships, and decreasing self-doubt and stress in social situations. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in heightened self-awareness and deeper connections with others.

I enjoyed this book, and I loved all the activities throughout that give ways to develop these skills. I just felt like the organization could be a little better, as it often gives just very brief descriptions of activities, then the detailed descriptions are later, so it felt a little fragmented and was hard for me to read through in a sitting. I will probably refer back to this though for some of the activities when needing new stress relief techniques though, so it is a really useful book, just could flow a little better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A functional and practical book on Emotional Intelligence
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2024
It has been suggested by some observers that ‘emotional intelligence’ (often referred to as EQ – a colloquial acronym mixing the idea of emotions and IQ together), is one of the most reliable predictors of success in life.

But can it really be improved? Or is it a static quality in humans much like IQ?

This book offers a summary of available information about emotional intelligence; in particular, how to exercise it and derive quantifiable results.

The author suggests that many processes are essential to improve EQ; self-reflection, self-awareness, rationalising maladaptive thought processes, forming a positive relationship with the mind and body. Like a positive experience of therapy, people can only maintain results through repetition and daily practice. The author suggests that through developing one's 'theory of mind', different forms of empathy can be nurtured that can result in improved social understanding and behaviour. Simply put, ‘Know thyself and you will know others’.

If I am asked to offer a criticism of this book I would say that it has an absence of personality and flare. Having said that the book is well written and edited. For readers who prefer their books to be functional, mechanical, and factual this book offers a good summary of the available self-help literature.

This book is a great read, especially for those working in teams or areas with a lot of intermingled personal relationships. It covers each of the EI pillars in a lot of detail, and is sprinkled with relatable anecdotes of things that happen to every day people.

It's also a very optimistic take on mental health, and how emotional intelligence and awareness relate to happiness and feeling content in your own life.

Great read.
