Wade has the reader appreciate that there is an art to empathy, to improved mental health, to enriching ongoing relationships and to conflict resolution. These are talents that can be learned and used in one’s personal and professional life. For instance, by someone who is interested in team-building and taking on a leadership role.
I thought this book would be a little “brush up” in social skills, and interpersonal reminders. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reader comes to appreciate that emotional intelligence is a lifelong path of self-improvement, rather than a static state of being.
I find in a short time, I am getting better at regulating my emotions, enjoying and appreciating my relationships, and decreasing self-doubt and stress in social situations. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in heightened self-awareness and deeper connections with others.
Wade eloquently lays out the four pillars of EQ: self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills, providing practical insights and actionable strategies to develop each aspect. What sets this book apart is its emphasis on practical application; Wade doesn't just talk about the theory of emotional intelligence, but offers real-world exercises and examples to help readers integrate these concepts into their daily lives.
I highly recommend Emotional Intelligence to anyone committed to personal growth and enriching their relationships. It's a must-read that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on your life. Five stars without hesitation!

But can it really be improved? Or is it a static quality in humans much like IQ?
This book offers a summary of available information about emotional intelligence; in particular, how to exercise it and derive quantifiable results.
The author suggests that many processes are essential to improve EQ; self-reflection, self-awareness, rationalising maladaptive thought processes, forming a positive relationship with the mind and body. Like a positive experience of therapy, people can only maintain results through repetition and daily practice. The author suggests that through developing one's 'theory of mind', different forms of empathy can be nurtured that can result in improved social understanding and behaviour. Simply put, ‘Know thyself and you will know others’.
If I am asked to offer a criticism of this book I would say that it has an absence of personality and flare. Having said that the book is well written and edited. For readers who prefer their books to be functional, mechanical, and factual this book offers a good summary of the available self-help literature.
It's also a very optimistic take on mental health, and how emotional intelligence and awareness relate to happiness and feeling content in your own life.
Great read.
