Lightning & Ember (The Goddess Maker Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

No expectations—no chance for disappointment.

Akina de Kitamura had long given up hope that Volandrian nobility would come to accept her and her identical twin sister, Miki. Four years at the Academy, Volandria's most prestigious military school, hadn't changed her opinion. They were bastard children, the product of a Volandrian nobleman's tryst with a Solterrean commoner. Even the favor of famed commander Marquis Genji de Kitamura, their uncle, couldn't spare them from scorn. Her engagement to her childhood friend Cassius d'Etrius's older brother compounded the sentiment when the former heir to the duchy fled in the dead of night after murdering his family.

She hated that her sister and her friend saw the exposition at the end of graduation as their chance to force the haughty nobles to acknowledge them. The event brought the best and the brightest from military schools across the Four Kingdoms. It also brought along increased pressure to perform. All eyes would be on the Academy graduates to deliver as this year's hosts, and Cassius and Miki had no intention of letting the opportunity slip by for any of them, even if it meant dragging Akina along with them.

However, when an unexpected intruder brings about shocking revelations concerning the past, the trio realizes nothing ever goes quite as planned. With their wits and training to guide them, they race to adjust to the changing landscape and protect one another from harm.

Review

Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite

"Lightning & Ember is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure subgenres, and forms the opening novel to The Goddess Maker series. It is suitable for older teen and adult readers. Penned by author E.B. Repetto, this entrancing narrative unfolds in a world of nobility, prejudice, and unexpected revelations. Akina de Kitamura, marked by her lineage and past, navigates a society that scorns her despite her prestigious education. The narrative takes an unexpected turn during a significant exposition, revealing shocking truths about the characters' history. As Akina, her sister Miki, and her friend Cassius grapple with these revelations, the story becomes a riveting blend of fantasy, intrigue, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Author E.B. Repetto has crafted a truly immersive reading experience, plunging readers into a richly crafted world with complex characters that grip you from the start and never let go. I enjoyed the well-planned balance of growing political intrigue, exciting personal relationships, and the characters' internal emotional struggles that come to the fore in the many challenges of the plot. The themes of acceptance, identity, and the impact of societal expectations resonate throughout the narrative. These are explored with naturalistic dialogue that makes them a key part of the emotional arc of the story but without ever over-explaining them or slowing down the plot. I resonated with the self-discovery of it all, and the close narrative made it easy to explore this well-imagined, atmospheric world through Akina's keen eyes. Overall, I would certainly recommend Lightning & Ember as a must-read for fantasy fans seeking an exciting new series that promises to be thoroughly compelling."

Unforgettable characters, sword fighting, magic, heartbreak, trauma, fighting prejudice and so much more. The fight scenes were some of the best I've ever read. The original magic and world building is incredible. This was a fantastic read. 👏

Wow, this was some kind of amazing book. The main characters are all strong and capable and capable of getting into trouble. This story just grabbed me from the first page and I just held on for the ride and what a ride it was. Oh, I just have to know what's coming next, it's driving me nuts. Hopefully the author will be putting out the second book soon as patience is not my middle name! Great book. Enjoy it.
