This new book is dedicated to a seemingly benign topic, the critical importance of "light" by medical specialist Martin Moore. Don't be fooled! This book and its topic are significant assets to readers who wish to advance their knowledge to enhance their HEALTH.Before I elaborate on why 'The Light Doctor' is a must-read for everyone, I want to draw attention to its exploration of a thought-provoking societal issue. Dr. Moore skillfully presents an ongoing conflict between our long-term environmental health and the potential risks to our short-term physical health due to light-related factors. His insights will undoubtedly enlighten us and raise awareness about the complex relationship between our energy, light consumption, and physical health needs.Now, I want to be clear that "The Light Doctor" isn't just theoretical academic pop-science literature. It has a MAJOR practical component, and it does so directly to me. I am a Sleep Health specialist and work with people who are having nagging sleep troubles (that some anti-depressants and zolpidem won't fix) repair them, and with people who want to enhance their energy for work and home using my Sleep Fitness and Burnout Training programs.To support my efforts, I released 'Sleep Fitness: The Top Ten Sleep Facts that Matter' here on Amazon around the same time as the 'The Light Doctor' release. I wish I had read Moore's contribution before my release, as I may have included a dedicated chapter on light. Regardless, my first reason for the 5-star Review is that this dedicated book gave me a mix of history, science recaps, and modern context, which I know will INFORM my direct clients I work with who have 'Circadian-" related sleep challenges, which are sleep issues related to our body's natural sleep-wake cycle. Thank you, Dr. Moore, for this alone!Now, FOR THE REST OF US, we have long known (or remember a bit) the early health and psychology model called "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs." I bring it up here to remind us of the core bottom health features that make up the PRIMARY FOUNDATION of all human health, both physical and mental: breathing (new book this past year you can check out), food (we all know the importance of diet on our health and illness chances), water (same), shelter (self-evident), clothing (evolving), & sleep (where I come in).After reading "The Light Doctor," I am 100% convinced that "LIGHT" is a missing baseline core element informing various health issues. This is the most current information and research on the effects of lighting - both good and bad - with guidelines for how to provide good lighting that supports health and the environment while saving energy. The most recent studies are all included - it's carefully researched and extremely well presented.

When we ordinarily think about health, we usually don't pay much attention to light. In this book, Martin Moore-Ede explains to us why this is a huge mistake. Too much artificial light in particular can pose significant health risks, he tells us. He explains to us in a readily accessible prose the science behind his conclusions. If that were not sufficient for us to read the book, he also provides us with an extensive manual of useful advice as to how we can optimize our health through the proper use of light. A great combination of the theoretical and the practical.

As a 40-year veteran of the printing industry, I have always been closely related with the creation of viewing conditions that provide the best perception of color for all observers. But now, Mr. Moode-Ede is showing us other faces of the lighting conditions which needs to be taken into account. We now see that designing indoor lighting for all use cases and for all times of the day requires extreme care if we are to lead healthy lives.

I've read the book as it came out on substack, and am excited to have it available as a book to recommend to patients. I think the information in this book is just as important as any book available on nutrition or exercise. Well written and much needed information that will help you live a healthier life!

I really enjoyed this book and was able to take information it gave me to purchase a few new circadian bulbs and lights for my house to improve my health and longevity. A lot of eye opening information about the detriments of indoor (and outdoor) lighting.

More people need to know about the side effects of artificial light at night! Our bodies evolved or were designed for natural bright sunlight during the day, and darkness at night. We have ignored our biology for too long and mankind is now seeing tragic health consequences. Dr. Moore-Ede was involved in identifying the circadian clock in humans and has done amazing amounts of research on circadian rhythm health and the effects of exposing our bodies to light at both the correct times of day and incorrect times. This information is crucial to human health at a root cause level and is a must read for medical professionals and anyone wanting to help improve overall health. As Morpheus in the Matrix offered up a red pill to wake up Neo and change his entire perspective on life, once you start researching circadian rhythm health and the effects of natural sunlight on the body, you'll never see light in the same way. Read the book.

I found this book after stumbling across related research by Dr. Jack Kruse, and my health has improved so much after implementing steps to optimize my natural circadian rhythm. I used to be an extreme night owl. I now wake up with sunlight and am sleepy by 9pm! I feel so much better overall! Given the fact that both my parents died from cancer related conditions, I am thrilled to be taking steps to improve my health without the need of a prescription. I am truly grateful for doctors like Dr. Martin Moore-Ede that are getting this research into books for the general public.

As a 30+ year veteran in the lighting industry I have experienced massive technical breakthroughs that have dramatically increased lighting output per watt. At the same time I have seen many poor decisions made to sacrifice light quality in favor of saving the most capital. This disdain for what is easily our most important sense never failed to surprise me. Now with the remarkable and tireless effort by Dr. Moore-Ede we have a document that stands as a testament to just how important natural lighting is and how deleterious poor artificial lighting can be to ones health and longevity. Conversely, thoughtful artificial lighting can become a health and productivity boon that makes saving a few more watts seem silly.

This book provides all the relevant studies and scientific reasons on why current LEDs are bad and we need to change the status quo. This has bolstered our commitment further to bring high quality light indoor. I have even bought the book for the entire team to read and get excited. This book comes with the weight of serious science rather than at the whim of some celebrity.
It deals with health impacts that make the latest dietary fad insignificant. Why haven't we heard more about this when the hard scientific research has been done and the results known for years?
Everyone not just night workers needs to know about the health effects positive as well as negative of correct circadian conscious lighting.
For those of us living a long way from the equator getting lighting right is more complicated but intelligent circadian illumination holds the promise of a positive impact on day length related conditions such as Seasonal Affective Disorder as well as the numerous other benefits set out by Professor More Ede.

This is a book that not only everyone should read but a book that everyone could read and easily understand.
I read the first parts of this book on Substack originally and was thrilled when Martin released it in paperback.

I have interviewed Martin on my podcast (A Healthy Shift Podcast - Episode 136) and he is very informative and lovely to chat to.

The book steps through everything light and its impacts on human health and then goes into the research that has been undertaken to develop true Circadian Lighting.
Everything in the book is well researched and referenced.

As I said earlier anyone could read this book and fully understand everything in it and I highly recommend people do.

This is a great book that is both Enlightening and Terrifying.
