About the author

For over 40 years, Dr. Martin Moore-Ede has been a leading expert on circadian clocks and their regulation by light, and a pioneer in applying this science to healthy lighting and living.
As a professor at Harvard Medical School (1975 – 1998), he led the team that located the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the biological clock in the human brain that controls the timing of sleep and wake. and showed how circadian clocks are disrupted by light at night. As founder and CEO of the global consulting firm CIRCADIAN® he pioneered technologies to help people safely adapt to working around the clock. His previous best-selling books “The Clocks That Time Us” and “The Twenty-Four Hour Society” are based on this work.
To address his clients’ growing concerns about the harmful effects of conventional fluorescent and LED lighting, Dr. Moore-Ede founded the Circadian Light Research Center in 2010. His discovery of the precise blue light wavelengths that are needed during the day but are harmful at night enabled the development of the first healthy white circadian lighting that automatically switches between blue-rich light during the day to entrain circadian rhythms, and zero blue light at night. This circadian lighting reduces the risk of numerous diseases caused by circadian disruption, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The IP was licensed to major lighting companies and acquired by Korrus to scale up the delivery of healthy lighting to the world.
Dr. Moore-Ede graduated with a First-Class Honors degree in Physiology from the University of London and received his medical degrees from Guy’s Hospital Medical School, and his Ph.D. in Physiology from Harvard University. He holds multiple patents on assessing and mitigating circadian disruption and fatigue, and on circadian lighting systems.

I found this book after stumbling across related research by Dr. Jack Kruse, and my health has improved so much after implementing steps to optimize my natural circadian rhythm. It deals with health impacts that make the latest dietary fad insignificant. Why haven't we heard more about this when the hard scientific research has been done and the results known for years?
Everyone not just night workers needs to know about the health effects positive as well as negative of correct circadian conscious lighting.
For those of us living a long way from the equator getting lighting right is more complicated but intelligent circadian illumination holds the promise of a positive impact on day length related conditions such as Seasonal Affective Disorder as well as the numerous other benefits set out by Professor More Ede.
The Light Doctor literally shines a light on how our body works, the impact LED lights have on us and our biological rhythms and what we can do about it at home and in our work places.

There is also a great use of color images throughout the book so if you're going to read one book about artificial light, this is it!!
I read the first parts of this book on Substack originally and was thrilled when Martin released it in paperback.
I have interviewed Martin on my podcast (A Healthy Shift Podcast - Episode 136) and he is very informative and lovely to chat to.
The book steps through everything light and its impacts on human health and then goes into the research that has been undertaken to develop true Circadian Lighting.
Everything in the book is well researched and referenced.
As I said earlier anyone could read this book and fully understand everything in it and I highly recommend people do.
This is a great book that is both Enlightening and Terrifying.
