Powerful steps to point you in the right direction
If you feel a little off and cannot pinpoint what’s going on with your mental well-being and the impact on your relationships, this book is an excellent place to start. Chapter 2 (Role of Childhood), Chapters 6 (Genetics) and 7 (Self-Reflection Assessment), in particular, will help frame your situation and give you a better context of what is happening. This is followed by Chapter 8 (Setting Boundaries in Relationships/Denial), the book's most critical chapter (IMO). The author emphasizes the importance of accepting your situation and providing sage advice based on the real-life experience of her marriage break-up. Reading this book will help identify your issues and save you much time making things worse, as you’ll be more aware of the patterns of behavior and how to redirect your actions.

"Anxious Attachment Recovery" by Cindy Heartgrove is a gem for those navigating the stormy seas of anxiety and attachment issues. This insightful guide offers a lifeline to anyone feeling adrift in emotions of rejection, overthinking, and fear of abandonment.

Heartgrove's book shines brightest in its chapter on communicating needs without fear—a challenge many face, especially when past family dynamics have suppressed self-expression. The advice on dealing with relationship triggers is a revelation, and the discourse on boundaries is a masterclass in straightforward clarity, making the often-difficult task of creating them seem achievable.

But this book isn't just a collection of insightful chapters; it’s a companion for anyone on the path to self-discovery and emotional healing. It includes a Self-Assessment Questionnaire to identify your attachment style, making the self-discovery journey accessible to all. The book addresses pivotal questions about breaking the habit of overthinking, tackling the fear of pushing loved ones away, and setting healthy boundaries with compassion.

The empathetic narrative is interwoven with Heartgrove's personal experiences, making complex psychological concepts digestible for everyone. This relatability is a crucial component, allowing readers to feel understood and supported as they move toward more fulfilling relationships.

For anyone seeking inner peace and healthier relationships, "Anxious Attachment Recovery" provides tools, understanding, and guidance. Heartgrove encourages transformation through kindness and self-compassion—ideal for readers ready to cultivate lasting connections and confidence. Keep this book close; it's not just a read, but a road map to emotional freedom.

Five stars. The author provided plenty of anecdotes and personal stories, speaking from what seemed like a very authentic and relatable perspective. The book was easy to read - it flowed well and was well organized. She gave examples of behaviors to look for, with possible reasons behind them. She even touched on physical symptoms of emotional stress, essentially training the reader to diagnose themselves (or others). She made it clear how understanding past trauma can influence present day behavior and relationships. And she consistently reassures the readers that they are not alone, or somehow defective just because they have a pattern of anxious attachment. I can't actually think of any constructive criticism, or suggestions for how to make the book better!

Based on personal experience, this book offers a compassionate layperson's insight and advice as she extrapolates meaning from her own life experiences. Since she is not an expert, citations would have been helpful, not just for credibility, but for further exploration of her important points, such as uncovering other causes of behaviors. (She does include a reference list of secondary sources for information such as Bowlby's decades-old but time-tested research). The book is well-written and comprehensive. Her strategies tend to be based primarily on CBT.

The author does an excellent job of breaking down complex emotions and patterns, making them easy to understand and relate to. I especially appreciated the self-assessment and the practical tools provided for managing overthinking, jealousy, and boundary-setting. Heartgrove’s personal stories and compassionate tone make the journey feel relatable, while the straightforward advice offers actionable steps toward building healthier relationships. This book is a valuable guide for anyone ready to understand themselves better.

I like that this book is written from the author’s perspective and that she is so open to sharing her experiences and insights. There were many experiences she had that resonated with me, I think particularly growing up in a family where there was alcohol abuse and the impacts later on in life. It was like reading my own life story. I also appreciate the self-reflection exercises, a great way to get to know yourself better and identify dysfunctional behaviour.
