Just Glow: A Memoir Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

Just Glow is a profoundly impactful memoir that provides readers with an unfiltered look at the turmoil and devastation of war, even long after the immediate aftermath has faded. It also delves into the enduring grief that accompanies the loss of comrades and how that sorrow permeates the lives of those who still remain.

Quotes

"In an honest and heartfelt voice, Augusto provides the reader with insight into the brotherhood in the military, and the importance of the bonds that exist. He illustrates the journey of the human spirit and love that surges from these bonds, despite the tragedy of war."

Gary Sturgis, Grief Specialist and Author of: SURVIVING GRIEF - 365 Days A Year

“This memoir is written so well and is a page turner despite the heavy subject…He writes with honesty and a fresh perspective. I like his focus on how important caring for one’s mental health is, why grief needs to be addressed so it can be healed.”

I have to applaud my friend, Jayare (as I knew him in high school) for writing this deeply emotional and thoughtful memoir about his experience as a corpsman during a devastating war. This is the first book written by someone I know personally that I have read. And I want to start by saying thank you, Augusto, for being vulnerable and sharing your story. I know it was a process in more ways than one. I’m proud of you!

His story gripped me from the beginning with his honest writing; it truly had a powerful impact on me. I could hear his voice and his personality shined through the pages. There is a difference between knowing that someone you know has been through war and reading about it: raw and intense. Augusto easily painted a picture in my head, and I felt like I was there with him in these moments of growth, strength, and sorrow.

I loved the way Augusto peppered his chapters with anecdotes from his childhood through after high school graduation within his chapters. He reflects and makes connections from that past to the things that happened to him during his years of service. It was cleverly done, and I know that was a huge part of his healing so many years later.

I wonder: how long did the correspondence with Dolly last? Did he ever lick that armpit? I also enjoyed the more humorous flashbacks (the DVD). I laughed and felt nostalgic in chapters 2 and 9- picturing the places and the people. I ugly-cried at the end of the 8th chapter when he finally heard his mom’s voice. And again when I experienced the loss of his friends through his eyes. And of course- at the end of chapter 13 with his reference to the title of the book had tears streaming down my face. Needless to say, I had a whole array of emotions and curiosities throughout the memoir. It really was excellent.

Your fallen brothers would be proud and honored by your remembrance and tribute to them.

This book takes you on a deeply emotional journey, starting with Augusto as a young man looking for answers, to a man profoundly changed through his war experiences. Augusto has the amazing ability to make you feel as if you are there with him, with his raw honesty and powerful descriptions. His ability to weave the past and present together is masterful. This moving book is so engaging that once you start reading it is difficult to put down. I finished the book in one day. I highly recommend this book.

This book is captivating, very difficult to put down.. I felt like I needed to keep reading to see what happened next. Augusto does a phenomenal job of putting the reader in his shoes, and walking us through his life experiences. We learn about what drew him to the military, and afterward how he was able to grieve, cope, and move forward following the traumatic losses he encountered during the war. The ability to immerse us in what he experienced in Iraq and Afghanistan is stellar. I felt as if I was looking down on the events and watching them in real time. There were parts of the book that gave me goosebumps, chills, and tears. Without providing any spoilers, I was not anticipating some of what had occurred, and if I was feeling even half the emotions Augusto did, I cannot imagine what it was like for him. This book is a powerful read, and highly recommended to anyone who enjoys military, nonfiction, memoirs, or inspiring reads.

Just Glow by Augusto C. Cespedes Jr was a raw, captivating and outstanding memoir. Re-telling of his time in Afghanistan and Iraq, Augusto also told stories of his childhood, how he came to join the Navy and his journey to find himself in the midst of war. His writing style brought me to each place he wrote about and I could feel every emotion he was feeling in those moments.

Memoirs aren't my normal go-to read, but I've been stuck in a slump. I commented on a Goodreads Facebook post on Friday that I was stuck and Mr. Cespedes himself recommended his memoir and I bought the kindle version instantly. I honestly could have finished the whole book in one day, it was that captivating, but we had a small family emergency that took my attention away for a couple days.

I am grateful this memoir came into my life. I grew up in an air force town and I have the utmost respect and gratitude for everyone in the military. Reading about what some actually went through was eye opening. We see the news and we hear the stories but this memoir made me actually feel it and I can't even imagine living through it.

Thank you for your service Mr. Cespedes, "Doc". (I'd address you formally but I don't know your rank!) I am sorry for your losses and for all you had to go through.

There’s nothing quite like reading a book and feeling as though you are inside the mind of the author, looking through their eyes as if you are experiencing firsthand what they are trying to convey. Augusto does just that with this memoir. Reading those last words and closing the book gives you the feeling of wanting more but also the bittersweetness of closure, which I think is a tribute to how meaningful this story really is. With each page you are hit with more raw emotion and depth, connected eloquently with hints of the past and present, resulting in what is the most heartfelt, well-written book I have come across in a long time.

Well-written memoir which kept me engaged and waiting to see what happened. Cemented my belief that as Americans we ought to be grateful for those who choose to serve and protect our country and promise to never forgot those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Just Glow, is a well written glimpse of the real effects our young men and women encounter when they make the choice to enlist in the Armed Forces. Corpsman Cespedes, relates the everyday trials shared by his company while training and in combat. His journalistic skill in painting pictures with words and his ability to weave his story from past to present with the utmost detail is impressive.

Through this author we realize that those fortunate enough to return will carry with them forever the friendships, emotions and memories of what they have encountered. It is what they choose to do with those memories that can influence the rest of their lives.
