I haven't had any problems with it overheating. That said, like any power supply (including the original HP part), it does get hot. I've noticed that it gets the hottest when I'm simultaneously charging the battery and using memory/processor intensive programs (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, streaming video, etc.). Even then, the housing was never hot enough that I was afraid it would melt. At most, I was concerned about the heat damaging the wood surface it was resting on, so I put it on top of a coaster. I think that's a small inconvenience well worth the savings of $70 - $95 compared to buying an official HP replacement part.
Because the price is so low, I have a power supply for home and one for the office. If I find a third location I could use a power supply, I'd buy this product all over again!
Update: I will say that this charger is working so far. Although, it does get way too hot. It get so hot that it cannot be held in your hand. The extreme heat is what generally kills these chargers. The heat cause fatigue of the plastic housing and tends to short out some of the internal components.
This is not a reflection on the seller, because they don't manufacture the charger. It's just the nature of this style charger. Hope this helps.

Would buy again.
Stopped working after a few months. Gets hot really fast and overheats. Good price though.... we have bought a few of them because they're cheaper than buying an official HP... Read morePublished on December 5, 2013 by Jess
