In the last few years, I had fallen into the habit of way overpacking. I'd go away for a long weekend looking as though I was permanently relocating. On a trip to Europe in 2015, I brought such an enormous, heavy suitcase that I could barely maneuver with it--and that was before I bought any souvenirs. The trip home was worse. I vowed to turn over a new leaf and bought this bag for my next trip abroad.
I'm pleased and amazed to report that this little backpack (along with a messenger bag) carried everything I needed for just over two weeks in Ireland and Scotland earlier this month (Aug. 2016). I'm not alone in finding the bag remarkable--when I checked into my Edinburgh Airbnb, the hostess asked where the rest of my luggage was. She was stunned that everything had fit into such a compact case. The pack is incredibly well-planned and -organized, and I found it reasonably comfortable (even when packed TO THE BRIM on my return trip), although I would not recommend it as a true trekking pack. It was an absolute joy to be able to zip off the planes and straight to my next adventure without waiting for luggage, and the backpack straps were easy to stow when I did check the bag on my return flight (because whiskey).
For those who are struggling (as I did) to choose between the Jr. and the full-size Mother Lode: I'm 5'2" and found this to be just the right size. I suspect that the full-size would have been too large/unwieldy for my torso. And I honestly didn't lament the reduced packing space.
Also, I was allowed to carry this onboard on both legs of a roundtrip flight between Dublin and Edinburgh (Aer Lingus Regional aka Stobart Air), despite the dimensions falling slightly outside their incredibly stringent bag requirements. (And I didn't do anything sneaky--both times I carried it up to the counter prepared to check it, only to be told "Oh, that's fine as a carry-on." But your mileage may vary).
Anyway, the Mother Lode Weekender Jr. would have been a steal at twice the price. I'm not sure I'll ever use my fancy rolling suitcase collection again.
The compartments are great, the inner lining of orange is lovely, and the material is high quality. This is no cheap bag, even though the price is surprisingly low. The inside zipper pouch on the flap is great for separating your undergarments or just using it as a nice compartment. I even packed 2 pairs of shoes and rolled my clothes in the middle. The straps for the internal compartment pull everything in nice and snug and then you have the outer pockets. I put my Baggalini purse as well as some papers and my toiletries on the outside flap and still had room for more.
The material of the bag is very sturdy, and for cleaning it, I just used a clean wet rag to wipe off dust and stuff from traveling.
I loved how nicely it fit over my shoulders, it's a great backpack to carry for long trips, and it saves you from checking luggage. If you are interested I even did an entire packing light video on this on YouTube but since I can't put any links on Amazon, just search my name (Farnoosh Brock) and packing light and you can see how I used this darling eBags to pack for 5 weeks in Europe.
Travel far, pack light, and use great luggage. Hope this review was helpful to you! Below is a picture of me packing for my 5 week trip without any trouble at all - thank you eBags!!!
The size is perfect for someone vertically challanged.
You can fit quite alot in the main compartment, using either the nylon separator that you can clip up to make 2 compartments (very thin so it doesn't take up space) or ignore it and have one large compartment.
Has an expandable zipper.
Front compartment is very useful for smaller items with easy access.
Has a mesh zippered compartment inside, an expandable water bottle holder on the outside that tucks away nicely when not in use, a zippered in luggage tag, pen holders, straps to keep your clothes in place, etc.
Color is exactly what I expected (I purchased the turquoise).
Padded laptop or tablet storage, located safely close to your back.
Shoulder straps comfortable.
It comes with a thin waist strap that doesn't lend much support, BUT, that said, it also comes with a nice thick cross over strap (I can't imagine ever wearing it like this). With a $4 plastic buckle and 5 minutes on a sewing machine, I turned my crossover strap into a waist strap. It can still be used for it's original purpose, but for me it is a great waist strap.
Pros: fit everything on our trip that I needed, and even more when we returned with souveniers.
Fit under the seat or in the overhead on the airplanes, and I really had it full.
Because it is lightweight to begin with, the backpack itself didn't affect the weight of all I planned on stuffing into it.
Amazing what went into this back pack and I never had to use the expandable zipper.
Very, very comfortable to wear, even full. I am not young (late 50's) or tall (see above review), although active, I have found as I get older backpacks hurt my back and use them less and less. This did not happen with this backpack. It didn't hurt my back no matter how heavy because of the thick padded straps BUT it also needed that heavy waist belt (see my review above). We always walk if we can so I wore this 'stuffed' when we walked to and from the train station while also wearing a purse that was very full, and pulling a suitcase. Walking around the trainstation and airport, this pack never felt heavy.
I plan on making it my weekender travel bag it holds so much and is easy to use.
