Too many courses tend to bore you to death with useless information that slows you down and doesn't inspire you to continue. Not this one. While simple and to the point, the exercises that it uses are very good, with little or no fluff to get in the way of its intended purpose, teaching me the basics on how to play piano. More than this you cant ask for in a teaching course. Well worth the price asked.
This method is just fantastic for me because I can skip over all the things I already know, and I can take the same lesson over and over and over again if I'm having trouble with it, never trying the patience of the computer (unlike the humans!) I've been using it maybe two weeks? and I'm amazed at all the things I've learned, and all the songs I can play. The teacher's videos add just the right touch, the singing on the songs is lovely. There's an accompaniment track for the songs so you can get up to tempo and have fun playing with them. Guitar chords are provided (!) which means I can add the chords I know on selected simple songs to make the lesson more challenging. It's a heavily song-based curriculum, lots of Baroque music, but I'm also working on Piano Man by Billy Joel.
My feeling is once I finish this disk, I will be ready for piano lessons with a human. And I will be playing piano pretty darn well by then, too. I just can't recommend this highly enough.
As for the product, I had been using it on another computer, but uninstalled it from that computer and then reloaded on this computer. I like the program thus far, probably less than 20% into the program.
Note that this is a starter program - it is very very basic, just what you need if you know nothing about reading music or playing piano (they do a decent job of presenting the material in a balanced fashion, so that it's not too dry for kids or too cute for adults) .
But the software is configured to let you customize your learning experience to a certain degree. Want to watch the instructor video for a certain lesson? You can watch it or skip it and move on. Like to play with an (albeit kind-of cheesy) accompanying background track? You can enable that (or a simple metronome click) or practice without it. You'll want to do the lessons in order, but you are not forced to use every bell and whistle the program offers if you don't want to.
I think the best part of the program is the interactive feedback - once you complete a piece, the program will show a small balloon with a % rating - if you get less than 100%, you can click the balloon and the program will show you just where you may have played a wrong note or released a note too soon, etc... This works pretty well for keyboards connected via USB/Midi.
Anyway, for the cost and what you get, this is an enjoyable program for learning some basic piano and sight reading skills.
Now if could only make my fingers thinner and more flexible!
