Very unofficially, I metered the large cousin CN-900HS at 500fc at 5.5ft. That is the length of my arms - my official measure on the NAB show floor. ;-) Compare that to the Lightpanels 1x1 SuperSpot (similar to the CN-600HS) which delivers 190fc at 5.5ft. (I did the best I could to snoot my meter at NAB but am sure to have received some spill from adjacent instruments and the room so consider that reading a little high.)
There are no photometrics from Shantou or the OEM distributors. This is a critical metric for my evaluation of instruments. I look forward to testing this instrument.
Traditional color meters like my Minolta Color Meter II cannot read LED sources. To get a gander at color at NAB, I used my Canon SD990IS point-and-shoot on manual settings. Set at "daylight", I could see what color cast each instrument suffered.
The CN-900HS and its cousins definitely have a green spike that is managed with -green filters as others have noted here. Interestingly, Litepanels secretly keeps hard minus-green filters that you must ask for. you can't order them on their website.
Despite LED binning (selecting from the best from those delivered by LED manufacturers) different LED types display widely varying color character. (a spot LED vs. a flood LED.) Litepanels instruments are all over the place with their CRI and color spikes. For example, I could ascertain, by eye, a significant difference between the spot and flood banks of LED's of the Litepanels Bi-Focus instrument.Read more ›
It is bright enough to act as fill when used outdoors, which means its great all-around indoors.
No buzzing or flickering.
Small and compact.
Dimming works great.
Filters are nice to have, but can slide out easily by accident while transporting.
The U-mount prevents the barn doors from being spread any wider than 90 degrees....pretty silly oversight. I'd prefer a tilt/swivel mount.
Sturdy aluminum construction is strong but still light weight.
Love the V-mount battery option! Save money and hassle, order a high-capacity battery here:[…]
and a cheap and small charger here: […]
I chose instead to buy 2 cheaper and lower capacity batteries (4400mAh), but they don't have a D-tap and required a big, heavy, bulky charger that cost 3X the price of the charger from LAColorShop! For the record, this light runs for 2 hours on a single 4400mAh (65wh) battery. The battery (on my charger) takes almost 4 hours to charge.
This light is the new workhorse in my portable compact LED light kit!
If you want max light output for studio sets, go with the 900 or 1200. The 600 is better (smaller) for transporting.
Some of my Lowel lights are almost 35 years old, and still serve me well. However, I'm frequently in situations shooting in daylight, or through windows with daylight exteriors, and the tungsten Lowels, much as I like them, simply cause too much trouble due to mixed source lighting. 3200K color in a 5500K world makes for some weird orange effects. I shoot stills and video, so my preference is continuous source lighting.
I've only had this 600 LED dimmable light for 10 days or so, but already I can tell it would be nice to have 4 or 5 of these fixtures.
My initial tests, using the supplied rigid plastic frost diffuser, produced pleasing skin tones and wood color. I have not tried the supplied magenta filter, which is obviously provided to offset the green spike many people attribute to LED lighting.
My initial test was using a 5D Mk II set manually to sunlight, no custom white balance or anything special.
The dimensions of this light, along with freedom of heat, is going to make it my primary fixture for interviews in low ceiling office and home interiors. No more worries about scorching walls and ceilings with my Lowels, or fighting for space with softlights. This 600 LED light is bright enough to bounce off foam core whenever a softer source is required.
One special feature of this particular light is the included Sony V-mount powering. You can still use AC with the supplied cords, but for people like me with a bunch of batteries on hand, cordless powering is a terrific option. My Sony BP-L40 Lithium Ion batteries are rated 14.4V 2.7Ah.Read more ›

The light falls off too quickly to make it a practical loacation lighting tool. Maybe good for CU or portrait work. Read morePublished on December 27, 2013 by Robert Kuhns
