After working past the initial setup I was dumbfounded to find the device is not yet compatible with Ecobee's own thermostats as a remote sensor (this was 50% of my interest as the sensors drop in and out on the far side of my home). Their site says they should have this functionality by summer, but this seemed very half baked at release time.
This replaced a Z-Wave switch, so second step was attempting to set it up in SmartThings - their site has a howto which doesn't mesh with the smart things app I have (no Lights & Switches category in mine under adding a thing) - so another 40% down of my interest down the drain.
Finally setup Alexa - this is replacing an echo dot on our kitchen counter - this worked fine, is reasonably loud and works as expected.
Overall I'm giving this a generous 3 stars for now, I'll revisit it when they get the SmartThings & integration with their other products out the door, hopefully that'll be sooner than later?
You know, this all started because I needed a new thermostat. And since I got an Ecobee3lite, I figured I might as well as get an Echo. Then a few Dots. And some smart plugs...adding a Switch+ was a no-brainer!
Follow the instructions. 20-30 minutes to install the hardware, 10-20 more minutes to get it on your network and talking to Alexa. Then done! I'm looking forward to the update that will turn it into a remote sensor. The book of installation instructions is all you need, but there's also (through their ecobee app) video instructions if you prefer.
Right now, all it's good for is a motion light switch with a nightlight and a barely capable Alexa hub and HomeKit device.
It barely wakes up and then takes 3 or 4 tries for it to understand the command, meanwhile all my other echo devices are performing the actions because they overhear it from the other rooms!
There is no multi-room audio, no calling, no drop-in, no dimming, no 3-way switch capability, no hub recognition (where you can group lights to it and just say "Alexa lights on/off"), no temperature sensor integration to ecobee thermostats, no Wink or Stringify integration and practically no customization of the settings.
So, basically, you have a small form dot combined with a dumb lutron occupancy sensor switch for $100.
Originally in the beta rejection email, they said there would be other chances for testing. I think they did away with that and released an unfinished product as a paid second beta. Not cool.
The only reason I didn't choose the lowest rating is because the "potential" exists for all of these features except dimming and 3-way switch capability.
Loses my internet connection daily and can’t figure out how to fix itself without a reboot.
Installation was easy as my house has modern wiring. I assumed it was alexa so I went to the Alexa app to set it up only to realize I had to go through the ecobee app. No big deal, it was easy to connect and get up and running. It does respond well and the speaker exceeded my expectations.
The issue I have with this is that it is not a native Alexa device, the reason I bought it was to replace a dot and add automation to the switch. Sounded like a perfect fit, I even asked on a chat with ecobee if it worked the same as a dot and I was told "it is basically a mini dot in a switch". Not really, it is a 3rd party implementation of Alexa feature, which means the feature that I wanted this for was the "drop in" and "announcement" features. I contacted ecobee to see if/when it would be supported and they couldn't tell me if it would be or not.. this is the response...
Details of inquiry or issue: You called in to get information on Announcement feature of the Switch+ alexa. I explained for the time being this feature is only available on proprietary alexa devices not on the third party Alexa devices.
It depends on the Alexa licensing team that what features they will allow to use on third part Alexa devices. If they will allow this feature on third party devices, it will definitely be available on Switch+/Ecobee4 alexa as well.
I called Alexa support to see if this was a feature available to 3rd parties. I gave up on the call as she seemed pretty confused. I am also giving up on this switch and sending it back. It lacks parity and I don't think 3rd parties should be pushing as they do - light switch with alexa, that is a pretty misleading statement. It should be - light switch with some alexa functionality.
Also, the button is kinda funky to press, I wish it had better feedback when pressing.
