Contrary to what a couple others have said, these boxes are surprisingly sturdy for hollow boxes and are still in great shape after 1.5 years. They have held up amazingly well for us, but then, we have a mild-mannered daughter who isn't too rambunctious or tough on her toys--although those kids have visited and played with them too and they're still fine. (This is a toy best played with, supervised under parental supervision. Ie, if you let them stand and jump on the boxes, they are eventually going to break. That's not what they're meant for. Neither are they meant to be smashed, torn, peeled or ripped--which isn't easy to do, mind you--and if they're doing that, perhaps they're not quite in the age range for these yet.)
I completely disagree with the other reviewer that said these were a choking hazard. (Evidently a hormone-fueled review, there.) I am very mindful and adamant about watching for that (at that age, which passes), and I have never once been concerned with these very well-made blocks/boxes/tower. (We have never had peeling issues, either--and there is no plastic present on these.) If your kids are trying to shred and eat the boxes instead of play with them as per their intended use, they are too young for this toy. Put it aside and bring it back out again when they are more refined and developed in their playing. It will eventually be a big hit when introduced at the proper age, which may differ anywhere between 1-3, depending on the child.
Lastly, yes, these are heavy, sturdy, reinforced and laminated paperboard--thicker than cardboard. They are made with safe materials: non-toxic inks and adhesives, and have no strange odor whatsoever--so you can feel good about giving these to your little one. Not sure what the other low star reviewers were expecting--you just need to know what you are getting, here: hollow boxes that nest and stack on top of one another. Well-worth the $20, and one of my go-to gifts for toddlers. Always a huge hit! You can feel good about buying these. I do, and am so happy I did.
In fact, back here now buying some as gifts, and had to throw in my 2 cents to balance out and address the other, somewhat misguided reviews--so you can get some well-rounded input, as you research! :)
