Product Description
Plug & Play
This Mini RCA, CVBS, AV composite to HDMI converter, is a universal converter for analog composite input to HDMI 720p or 1080p (60Hz) output. If you want to use your VCR, camcorder, or game system on your HDTV or HDMI monitor, simply plug standard composite AV cables (yellow, red, and white) into the input port of the converter, and then connect an HDMI cable from the converter to your TV. It works great with either 720p or 1080p TVs, and the output mode is easily selectable with a switch on the device. This converter's advanced processing allowing you to get the clearest picture quality possible with optimal color and detail reproduction. Both video and audio are integrated into the HDMI output, providing an all-digital signal to maximize the fidelity of the audio and video.

The output is exactly as I would've expected an AV signal to look when converted to HDMI. The image quality is somewhat dubious, but that is to be expected when up scaling Composite signals (with a native output of 240p/480p) to HDMI (720p/1080p). The quality itself does depend on the console/media player you're using, as different manufacturers may use different methods to display the image with varying levels of image quality and resolution. All consoles will have some sort of input lag due to the HDMI conversion and some will have this worse than others depending on how much is being rendered on the screen at one time. However other consoles may compensate for that with a downgrade in image clarity resulting in "blurriness" or "fuzziness". Basically, or to put it bluntly, older machines may have worse output than newer machines. (subjectively speaking of course).
The image is also stretched to accommodate modern HD monitors, i.e. the signal is fixed from 4:3 to 16:9 in screen resolution. Also, and this stumped me for a while until I discovered this, the unit doesn't power on right away after being plugged into the TV's USB port. It takes a bit for the converter to actually get itself running despite its HDMI signal being recognized by the TV. To be fair though, this may have just been my device alone, as I don't imagine each of enKo's machines being faulty, but it's something that I thought I should bring up.
My only real concern is that after a little while, the unit starts to become really warm. I admit that I'm not too savvy when it comes to electrical engineering and whatnot, but I do know that any machine without a cooling vent/fan, not to mention hot electronics in enclosed units, is not a good thing. I'm not sure what could be done to alleviate this issue, other than manually installing a fan myself. Hopefully this isn't too serious of an issue but I highly recommend that when the converter is not in use it is to be disconnected from the USB port to preserve power and it will be less costly on your electricity bill.
Overall, I would say that as far as Composite converters go, this one is pretty basic and will do what it was intended to with some effort. I would suggest Component/RGB over Composite/AV, but I understand that for some people the latter will get the job done just fine despite its drawbacks. If you have any devices that can or only use Composite as its native output and you wish to have it up scaled to an HDMI signal, or you have no other choice as was the case with me, then this is a fine purchase for what its worth.

The picture quality is about what you'd expect coming from a composite source, but converter's output is bright and clean with better color than the direct composite ports on my TV. These kinds of devices always come with some kind of input delay, though in my situation and with my skills I couldn't detect one. Of course, if you're the sort of person who is seriously effected by input lag, you probably shouldn't be using a LCD monitor for retro gaming anyway or you should be looking at far more expensive converters.
The audio quality is great, but take note that the device does not convert mono RCA inputs to broadcast through both channels. Older systems like the original NES only have one channel for audio, which this converter will port to either the left or right speaker. There are a number of ways to compensate for this, including splitters or different audio configurations on your sound system. But keep it in mind when you're buying the device.
Though the unit met all my expectations, I can't give it a full five stars for two reasons. First, the image output is always at a 16:9 aspect ratio. Very few retro games were available with widescreen aspect ratios, though the Nintendo 64 does have a few. Your monitor and TV may have a configuration option to compress the image down to a 4:3 ratio, allowing you to play retro games in their original aspect ratio, however it's less likely that your game capture card has this feature. Make sure to check for this feature on the devices you wish to use or accept that some of your games will look a bit strange stretched out. Second, the device gets very hot while it's plugged into the USB adapter. This isn't a major deal for me, but in an enclosed home theater system you may want to unplug it while it's not in use. I haven't tested to see if this device can survive high heat, but it could also raise the temperature of any devices around it causing damage over time.

Of course, don't think for a second that the "bad quality" is due to this product, it is all only because of the composite output from the consoles.
The enKo Mini Composite RCA CVBS AV To HDMI Converter puts the image from your quality directly into a HDMI input with no quality degradation or input lag. It is a really fast and really awesome product!
