Works great even used the adapters
I purchased this set to get started using rechargeable and with my eneloop setup this was my first step. These work great.I really haven't had any issues with these batteries or the chargers.I've even had to use the adapters in a pinch on some of my daughters toys and they've worked well.If you get a battery holder you can use it as a way to rotate your rechargables so you're getting use across all your batteries.I ended up purchasing a second set so I would have a spare charger. The cost difference between buying a new charger and getting the kit was negligible so I just purchased another kit.

Low Self Discharge rechargeable batteries are the way to go. Compare prices and you'll see that this combo gives you a very nice, sturdy case, an excellent compact charger and C/D battery adapters for free.

Case is heavy duty plastic with a real (not a living) hinge and decent latches, while the charger plug flips in for excellent portability.

Why Low Self Discharge?

Brief history of rechargeable batteries: In the beginning there was NiCad and all was good, but people found that the cells of Nicad had memory and that was bad. So then there were the cells of NiMH which could store more power than Nicad and had no memory, and that was good.

But these cells of NiMH also lost charge (self-discharge) fairly quickly, so that in a few months they were dead, and this was almost worse than memory. Alas, the men were angry and the women lamenting "Why have the electrons of NiMH abandoned us?

Then the prophet Sanyo came and said "I have made a NiMH cell that has a very low self discharge and I will give it a name like no other. I will call it ENELOOP"

And all the people said "Huh?" for the name was goofy in addition to being like no other. But soon the land was filled with celebration as they found that these batteries would hold their charge for months, even as long as a year!

The latest Eneloops recharge 1500 times, the earlier, 1000. Assuming you charge them every other day, that's 5-1/2 years for the older ones, over 8 years for the "Eneloop 1500" Other people rebrand Eneloop as their own (Most of the Duracell "pre-charged" appear to be Eneloop) but I still prefer the original - especially as the price isn't that much less for the other brands.

Sometimes the engineering and manufacturing quality of a product is so good, you just have to marvel at it. Eneloop batteries deserve that sort of admiration.

Instead of reiterating all the positive testimonials and the great testing results from the battery geeks, I want to describe my experience with Eneloop batteries exposed to environmental extremes.

I drive for a living in New York, with multiple battery-operated devices in my car that I need on a daily basis. When I'm not working, the car is parked outside in the open. During a winter cold snap, temperatures can drop into the teens or even occasionally the single digits. In a summer heat wave, temperatures can approach or even exceed 100 F. With the sun beating down on it, this makes the inside of the car a brutal oven-like environment.

Of course it's better if my devices can just remain in the car and be ready for action when I start work, but I worried about how the Eneloops would be affected by the seasonal temperature extremes.

The detailed online literature from Sanyo indicates that Eneloop batteries are especially well-suited to working in cold temperatures. My experience confirms that they feel perfectly at home in the bitter cold, unlike alkaline batteries. My devices have always worked fine without needing to warm up, and there were no ill effects on the batteries whatsoever.

My bigger worry was about the summer. Heat can be the enemy of batteries, and there are no operating temperatures beyond 50 C (122 F) mentioned in the Sanyo literature. My experience, however, was that the Eneloops stood up well to the heat. If I got less life out of a battery charge, it wasn't anything noticeable. The self-discharge rate was theoretically higher, but it's still low even if the batteries get hot. This confirms some tests I read online by a user who compared Eneloops stored in a car under the Texas sun versus some charged at the same time and stored indoors. After several months, there wasn't a big difference between the performance of the two sets in a flashlight.

Apart from the self-discharge rate, one could question whether being in a hot car doesn't damage the batteries or shorten their life. While I can't definitively answer this, I feel confident in stating that they are at least resistant to deteriorating in hot conditions. The most challenging situation in my car was an Eneloop-powered LED light bar mounted at the top of my dashboard right by the windshield. Those batteries had to deal with the high temperature in the car during the day (I drive at night), plus the direct sunlight beating down through the glass. Eventually the power button on the device oozed and cracked until it no longer worked properly. I had to throw out the light, but the three AAA Eneloops looked none the worse for their ordeal. I tested them in my La Crosse BC-700 and their capacities came up as 792, 821, and 814 mAh at a 100 mAh discharge rate -- still performing up to spec.

Another application where the Eneloops work well in challenging temperature conditions is in my bicycle lights. My bike is stored in the garage and the lights are very important for making me visible to motorists. Summer or winter, they do their job powered by Eneloop batteries.

It's good to know that you can depend on Eneloops for both indoor and outdoor applications in a variety of climates. They work in pretty much all conditions and are suitable for just about any type of device. I use them in everything from remote controls to high-draw devices such as a tactical flashlight.

Let me just mention that battery charge indicators on electronic devices don't read correctly with NiMH batteries, including Eneloops. This can cause some confusion and the occasional complaint that the batteries run down quickly. They don't! What's important is how long they power the device, not what the battery indicator reads. Because the voltage curve of the Eneloops is very different from that of alkaline batteries, the battery charge indicator on your device will drop relatively quickly at first and then hover at a partial reading for most of the discharge cycle. This is normal. The device will still operate for a long time on one charge of the Eneloops.

I would give Eneloop batteries a 6-star rating if I could.

I'm not a tech weenie. I don't want to have to study in order to buy the best product for my needs. And when I find the "right" thing I am sure to share my opinion so other non-tech-weenies can do the same. Here is my decidedly non-technical review.

My battery needs are varied and extensive. Aside from my beloved X-Box 360 Kinect (oh yes, middle aged women also love Mass Effect series), I've also got remote controls all over the house, mobile entertainment, dog toys, holiday decorations (you know, the creepy santa that moves), portable medical equipment for my mom who lives with me, security lights in the hallways, in house remote cameras...well, a LOT of battery needs. I also have my disaster preparations because I live in a zone known for Hurricanes AND Nor'easters. So much fun.

I was spending a fortune on batteries so I thought I'd try rechargables and I got the energizer recharging kind from the regular department store. They did okay, but I clearly had to recharge them more often and they weren't nearly as good as a set of fresh tossable kind. A friend noted my drawer full of batteries one day and told me that I should give this set a try.

At only $40, it was a no brainer to give it a try and I really can't believe the difference between this system and the energizer one I bought previously. Night and day.

First off, the batteries came pre-charged and testing showed between 93 and 97% charge remaining on every single one. That's pretty good considering it sat somewhere in an Amazon warehouse before I got it. And while I do use an Xbox controller recharge station, I'd rather not wait when I do get time to play something so I usually grab another controller that isn't rechargable and I used these first in that. Turns out, my controller lasted longer with these than the one that goes with the Xbox recharger...that's pretty darn good.

I've had batteries in things for over a month now and nothing has run out (save the Xbox controller), including the safety light in the upstairs hallway that goes on and off every time a person enters the hallway...a lot of use, in other words. The case itself is super handy and eliminates the huge mess in my battery drawer.

I'm also very comfortable with these due to their ability to hold a charge. Each year I have to clean out batteries for rotation in my hurricane/storm kit and it is such a waste. With these retaining their charge...and the additional ones I bought to flesh out the kit with more batteries...I can stop that practice and know I'll have batteries ready to go. I'll update if needed. Really great buy that is highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ottime per 30 cicli
Reviewed in Italy on December 29, 2014
