Have always been considering a security camera, and after some digging happened to find this Eufy Solar Cam which combines a motion sensor light and a motion sensor security camera...And it's solar charging? I know that I have to give this one a try as I have yet to find another one that provides all these features in one go....and I think I now know why...Packaging: The packaging is very simple...The unit itself, mounting bracket, and some tools, that's about it. It also comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable, which is useful because the USB plug is located at the back of the unit. YOu will need the cable if you ever want to connect the unit with accessories or use it for charging.Installation: Unfortunately it only comes with screws, NO Adhesive provided. So get your tools ready. Wall drilling will be required. Other than that installation is very easy.Camera: The camera is fixed at 120 degrees. There's no way to adjust the camera. So the mounting height will determine what you will be able to see.Video Quality: The video is very clear, and night vision works well with color as well.Audio: It isn't the best at recording voices, but you can hear most of the conversation. They are pretty loud as well.Storage: This unit comes with 8GB of onboard storage. You can view the videos from the Eufy app. However, there's no way to retrieve the video. I do not have homebase 2/3 so I would not know if they would connect. Within 7 days It has used approx 7% of the 8Gb storage according to the Eufy app.Detection: So far it has been pretty good. Based on my one-week ownership the only time the solar cam sent a notification and record video is when it detects human activities. I mount the unit where outside animals (cats) and cars pass this daily. So far there's no false detection on my end.Notification: it does indeed take approximately 10 seconds before my cellphone receives notification after the solar cam lights up and starts recording.Battery: This is where the saddening part. There are 2 types of charging for the battery. One is via USB charging. it takes approx 4 hours to get it from 0% to 100%. However, this isn't the reason we bought this solar cam right? We buy this because of the solar charging features. And this is exactly where the solar cam flops. I am located in Southern California, and my solar cam would receive direct sun exposure from 11 am to 4:30 pm during winter time. During the 7 days, it gains approximately 3% battery life after 5.5 hours of solar charging. This is disappointing, yet not surprising given how small the solar panel area is. The draining of the unit is anywhere between 3-5% during nighttime, assuming it is in standby mode.On 11/27 I had a mini party and during that night the solar cam triggered 21 times, and the battery dropped from 40% to 7%, causing a low battery warning and disabling the camera feature. Luckily the motion sensor light still works, and it was unable to charge past 10% the following days because of how small the solar panels are. A separate solar panel is pretty much a must if you plan on using it in a relatively busy area.Under normal usage, the battery would run out within a week. I am not sure where Eufy gets the "60 days battery life" in energy-saving mode, but it certainly survive far less than thatSolar panel: I ended up purchasing a solar panel from Amazon (Not the Eufy one but some way cheaper off-brand). The off-brand solar panel was able to charge the device by approximately 30% after 5.5 hours of charging. Maybe the Eufy one would perform better, but I am happy with what I have now because I don't need the unit fully charged. I just need it to be able to function regularly.App: The Eufy app is rather easy to use, and it has some very nice features. First off. it allows you to check the videos captured. It allows you to adjust the brightness of the light, and the sensitivity of the camera, and more importantly, it gives you the option to set the detect area of your unit. Overall I am happy with the app. I just wish there was a way for us to retrieve the videos in case we need to use them in the future.Conclusion: Overall I like the unit. It is a motion sensor light, it also provides a certain degree of security. However, the solar panel is very disappointing, Although I can fix the issue by installing and connecting an external solar panel. It does kind of defeat the whole "solar charging" purpose, and that's also what they were advertising. This is not the forever charging as they claimed as well unless by forever it means it stays at 5-7% forever.
