The Jesus Seminar, a group of scholars who have attempted to locate the authentic words of Jesus, made headlines two years ago by reporting that, of the entire Lord's Prayer as found in Matthew, the only words that could conclusively be attributed to Jesus are "Our Father." In this book they have published their results. This new translation of the four gospels, augmented by the noncanonical Gospel of Thomas, presents Jesus' words printed in colored code: red for words Jesus almost certainly spoke, pink for his probable locutions, gray for the less than likely, and black for the implausible. The translation itself is far more colloquial than most. More germane, though, is that the four levels of authenticity were determined by the casting of ballots, which the editors admit is problematic and represents the fundamental weakness of the book. Whether Jesus actually spoke certain words matters little in the long view of Christianity, making this book a theological curiosity and religiously superfluous.

Based on the work of the Jesus Seminar, which brought together a group of biblical scholars, this new translation of and commentary on the five Gospels offers an answer to the perennial question, What did Jesus really say? The group not only surveyed all the surviving ancient texts for words attributed to Jesus, but also examined the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas. Then, juxtaposing the Synoptic Gospels against John and Thomas, the seminar scholars began a long and arduous process to see if they could discover which sayings are close to what Jesus said, which might have originated with Jesus, those that are not his (though the ideas may be), and those that were created by his followers or borrowed from folklore. The story of how the scholars put together this translation is fascinating in its own right, but even more so is the color-coded New Testament itself, bolstered by enlightening commentary that explains why and how category decisions were made. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13:11 "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, darkly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known."
Hopefully as we gain chronological superiority, we also gain wisdom, and realize we need to dig deeper and look at our faith in non childish ways. We must look at the way the Bible has come to us historically, and see who Jesus is, as we Christians have built our faith and lives around Him. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an open mind and passion to learn more about their faith.

If You Are Serious About The Gospels...

This book is fantastic. A large group of biblical scholars examined every passage in the Gospels and voted on whether or not Jesus actually said the words attributed to him. There's a system of colored ink (red, pink, grey, black) so you know at a glance what the consensus was on any given passage. It isn't just a yes or no decision; it is one of gradations, which goes something like this:
-Jesus probably said it.
-Jesus might have said it; it is consistent with what he did say.
-Jesus did not say it, but the meaning is consistent with his teachings.
-Jesus did not say it, and it doesn't sound like what he'd say. This is attributable to the Gospel writers, not Jesus.

What makes this book invaluable is not merely the scholarly decisions themselves but the scholars' explanations of WHY they came to their conclusions. And sometimes it's a close call with the vote being almost evenly split. The reader benefits immensely from the careful examination of the original texts by these scholars, and their explanations are detailed, aided by their knowledge not only of the original texts but of the history of the period. Any serious student of the Gospels absolutely must have this book.

Great historical-critical approach to the Gospels - no better way to read Thomas

I primarily bought this book for the critical analysis of the Gospel of Thomas, but the canonical Gospels are well worth reading as well. It is critical analysis, rather than interpretation, but it helps in understanding both the historic Jesus, and the trajectory of Church during the first few centuries.

This is a historical-critical approach to the Gospels, and may be offensive to Bible Literalists. Because it is difficult to prove a historical figure from over 2,000 years ago actually said a particular statement, very few of Christ's words are colored as "true" statements. This is not calling the Bible "false", but merely saying "scientifically, we cannot prove those words were stated by Christ".

Because the gospels were written generations after Jesus' death, we cannot know for sure what Jesus the man said during his teaching. This book provides one way of evaluating the statements attributed to Jesus. In that regard it is a useful reference.

This is a must read for anyone who is sincerely interested in seeking truth and not just interested in making what they currently believe to be the absolute truth.

If you are well grounded in your faith (whatever it is) and are open to the possibility that there are other logical interpretations of the scripture, then you should get this book!

If you are one that feels that what you believe is the absolute truth without anyone who could entertain any other possibilities. Don't bother.
