I am hardly a literary critic. I'm just a 38 year old husband and father and the product of an extremely unfortunate childhood. I bought this book and couldn't put it down. If you're a guy, you'll find yourself described among the author's pages and you'll see yourself a bit differently as a man. It's really refreshing and inspiring. I know my life has changed. If you're a woman, you'll probably understand the man you love, whether he's your mate, your son or father, a bit better. It's a great book. :

I recently finished reading Jean Shinoda Bolen's book on archetypes in women over 50 and found it to be exceptional. I purchased other of her work and this one on men's archetypes is providing me, as a woman, insight into the male behaviour. I find it to be very informative. She has a way of describing the archetypes that grasps your thoughts and runs with them.

This book, together with its companion volume "Gods in EveryWoman" have been foundational in my understanding of my experience of clinical depression. The experience of Persephone speaks very powerfully. Following her myth through I also found that Hades and Dionysus spoke powerfully as well. I have either bought or borrowed every book or article she makes reference to in my myths and some she doesn't. Her evocation of those Gods and Goddesses does justice to all the sources I have found. This is profound stuff.

One of my favorite Jungian authors has written a book that I keep giving away. I have given it to young fathers trying to understand their sons, I have given it to friends trying to understand themselves, I have given it to collegues trying to understand their patients, and I give it to myself by reading every now and then.
If you want a framework, a language, a reference point to understand and discuss men's issues....this a great book. I used it in a workshop I led for psychiatric residents and for three years heard references to it in our discussions and supervision.

This gives a detailed history of the Gods of ancient Greece, and their counterparts in Rome. Tells the birth of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Tells what came before them, and tells the origins of the other Olympian Deities - Ares, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, Dionysus, Hermes and Hephaestus. The myths alone are worth reading the book, but there is much more.

Each God is symbolic, for the Most Potent Qualities of the Masculine Psyche. The Gods are the personification of the Eternal Traits of Masculinity. Any man can relate to Zeus, Poseidon and Hades to some degree, though most favor one of the three. The strong domineering types relate most to Zeus, Those with deep feelings prefer Poseidon, and Introverts favor Hades. Olympus, the Ocean, and the Underworld are used as metaphors for for the unconscious and subconscious minds.

The lesser deities are also used. Their Myths embody the Timeless Tales, the stories that repeat in every generation. Dionysus, Hermes, and Apollo are the embodiment of the out going social actions. Ares is the personification of the Warrior Personality - he's both a protector and destroyer. Hephaestus represents the craftsman, and artist. He embodies men who express themselves through work/creativity.

Every man can have a connection to one, or more, of the Gods. If he can identify the Archetypes he favors, he can then activate them, and harness their power. He can have The Divine Maleness flowing through his Mind, Heart, and Soul.

Bolen's work helps me understand men. After multiple re-readings, I'm still finding it fascinating and helpful. I find it more helpful than any other self-help psychology book and I've read a lot of those.

Archetypes are a powerful tool for self-knowledge because they tap into the universal collective language we all share. Learning to become more aware of your own archetypes can help you see yourself, the bigger picture and is a good place to start creating solutions for yourself and others. This book is for men but women will benefit as well by integrating the masculine archetypes within themselves and to better understand the men in their lives. Jean Shinoda Bolen has also written a most wonderful book for women called "Goddesses in Everywoman: Powerful Archetypes in Women's Lives". Both of her books are keepers in my library and I refer to them often for reference in my own writing.

Jean Shinoda Bolen, author of several books on the archetypal gods and goddesses in our lives, is a thoughtful writer whose prose is easy to handle, being not only easy to understand but filled with interesting examples from life. I liked both books, Gods In Every Man and Goddesses In Everywoman. I am about to teach a course on the role of the Greeks, their stories, of Ulysses, the gods and the goddesses in our lives today. This book was a "god" send, and both were highly recommended by a teacher who teaches courses that deal with Carl Jung and his writings. Both books give an excellent overview of many of the players in the Greek Olympian panoply of gods and goddesses and so it's also by way of introduction to a fascinating subject, well researched, well written, and totally engaging.
