Horrible sequel that betrays the Seldon Plan

I know the book is out of print, but I have to put in this review. If you are a Foundation Series fan please do not bother reading this book and certainly skip the previous two of the series (Foundation's Chaos and Foundation's Fear). I have tried twice to get through this terrible book and quit in disgust both times. Three authors (Binford, Bear, Brin) were given permission by Asimov's estate to write a sequel series to Asimov's Foundation Series and what a mess they made of it. David Brin is the best of the three and he makes an attempt to clean up and explain the silly characters and plot points the other two writers inserted into the Asimov world. Simulation characters (Sims) imbedded in robotic code come alive and menace everyone, robot factions opposing Daneel come out of the woodwork, human rebels vying for control of human history kidnap Hari, and on and on. This series takes the idea that Asimov started in his sequel books that robots were the ones who actually controlled human development and emotions and extends this philosophy way beyond belief. Finally, in this book the final trashing of the original Foundation Series concept is completed. It is shown by David Brin that the elegant and beautiful Seldon Plan was but a stopgap to a world of group-think with no individual will and the robot R. Daneel Ovilvaw is the manipulator of all mankind. And his reason? Because he alone thinks it's the right thing to do. What a betrayal of the original benevolent character of Daneel and a slap in the face of Hari Seldon as the genius author behind the plan. I am so disappointed. Two stars only because he tried to clean up the mess.

Brin tried too hard to connect the two previous books in this series with the original Asimov Foundation, Robot, and Empire series. I think Brin, along with Bear and Benford, did a great injustice to the orinal work by Asimov. This book is not terrible in and of itself, but it does tread roughly upon an established and revered science fiction universe. How Daneel can be such an integral part of the story in this series, yet be all but nonexistent in the Asimov books is a mystery none of these authors really explains. This book, along with Foundation's Fear and Foundations Chaos only left me aggravated. Angry with myself for having read them.

Since it only adds contention, I would only recommend it to those who must read everything Asimov-related, or to those David Brin fans out there. I give it three stars because it is a good science fiction story...it just isn't a good Foundation story.

OK, but lose those robots...

David Brin's writing style is better than Greg Bear's in "Foundation and Chaos" and infinitely better than Benson's in "Foundation's Fear." I am not crazy about any of these three books because they all wildly over-emphasize the role of robots in Asimov's Foundation universe setting. Asimov's concept was that robots, at most, provided mankind with nudges here and there to set us on the right path. This "Killer B" trilogy essentially reduces human beings to chattels under the secret but obtrusive control of these wretched machines.

In this novel, Brin at least has the wit to see that this interference shows a complete lack of respect for mankind by these robots. It shows almost a chronic fear of freedom and independence not only by the robots, but by these authors, who largely fail to see the horror of this scenario. (Is this a symptom of the modern welfare state?) **Minor Spoiler** However, his solution, and there did need to be one, is the dismal "Gaia-Galaxia" scenario that Asimov introduced in his latter Foundation novels. I always thought that this "solution" was implausible and unappetizing, so I cannot say that I was happy to see it here.

I gave this one three stars because it was an OK read, but probably I am being overly generous. This trilogy is a disappointment at many levels.

I enjoyed reading all three books in this "second trilogy", but after reading each of them, I felt a mounting disappointment that culminated just after finishing the last book.
First, I'm disappointed how Dors and Lodovic were used, perhaps I should say not used.
Second, I'm disappointed how the author kept bringing in still more dissident robot groups. Talk about Deus ex machina! Got a plot problem, bring in another group! The only behind the scenes group that's missing is the fabled tri-lateral commission.
Third, I am disapointed at all the loose ends and hints for plot ideas to come.
Finally, I'm disappointed how absolutely nothing ever happens through the strength of the individual or even, God forbid [and there's a word you won't find anywhere in this book] by chance. Everything happens due to behind the scenes machinations by Daneel or some other group. These books are the polar extreme opposites to anything by Stephen Donaldson---who celebrates the strength of the individual.
I realize that Asimov was the one who decided to combine the Robots and Empire books and he did it well. I can't say the same for the killer B's continuation. The second trilogy books are like desserts that taste good but leave you feeling empty.
