As a good historical overview, fabulous

Brown write a good overview of the historical process of Communistic rise and fall, appropriately named. There were many great illustrations, details, overviews, comparisons, and contrasts that provided an understanding and capacity for Westerners who hadn't experienced those days to partially internalize his messages. In general a very good read for generic context and background - I wouldn't recommend it for advanced studies or in-depth analysis.

Brown breaks down the complexities of communism in practice and explains it all better than anyone I have come across. He does best when focusing on the Soviet Union and China but gets rather sketchy when talking about Cuba or Vietnam, but you can't be an expert on everything.

I bought this book for a school project. I had pretty low expectations and was only reading it because it was required. The farther I progressed in the book, the more I realized this wasn't just another social movements history book. Archie Brown goes into impressive detail, the book is incredibly well written, and the content is intriguing. If you want the authoritative text on communism, buy this book.

The book provides a solid and concise overview of communism from a western perspective. Concise is the operative word here, since it doesn't go into a lot of depth on each specific topic, which would of course have been impossible within the confines of a single book.
