Distinguished political columnist and veteran Washington correspondent Jules Witcover brings us an honest, meticulously researched, and up-to-date biography of one of America’s boldest vice presidents: Joe Biden. A fascinating portrait of an outspoken man of courage and strength who rose up from working class roots and has persevered over numerous personal and professional setbacks, Joe Biden is a classic political Cinderella story that gives readers a close-up look at this sometimes explosive and controversial politician and his role in the Obama White House.

Here we have a good, basic biography of Joe Biden, currently serving as the 47th Vice President of the United States.

It starts out with his childhood first in Scranton, Pennsylvania and later when his family moves to Wilmington, Delaware. During his time there, Biden became interested in politics and dreamed of one day being able to serve in the United States Senate. He went to law school and became a lawyer working to help minorities in Delaware. He still wanted to serve in the Senate, but was convinced that he needed more name recognition. So he got elected to the New Castle County Council and served there for almost two years before seeking election to the Senate.

During the campaign, he faced veteran Delaware politician Cale Boggs. A man considered by some to be unbeatable. But Biden, against all odds managed to beat him. He was only twenty-nine years-old at the time, and only reached the constitutional age of thirty weeks later. However, tragedy would strike Biden when both his wife and his daughter were killed in an automobile accident the next month after the election. Biden considered giving up his Senate seat, but was convinced otherwise by Mike Mansfield. He was sworn-in at the bedside of his sons, injured in the accident, in the hospital becoming one of the youngest senators in U.S. history.

Biden would go on to serve about thirty-six years in Senate. Most of the book covers his time there. He served on the important Judiciary and Foreign Affairs committees. Much attention is given to the nominations of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. Biden was against both nominations and was successful in having Bork rejected. He also tackled other issues such as protecting women against violence.

In 1987, Biden decided to run for president in next year's election. Unfortunately, his campaign was barely off the ground when he made a speech with quotations and forgot to give credit. He was widely accused of plagiarism and ended his bid shortly afterward.

He stayed in the Senate. Biden was against the proposed Iraq War in the early 2000s. Despite this, he decided to vote in favor of the resolution authorizing President Bush to use force against Iraq. It was a decision Biden would come to regret.

In 2007, he launched another bid for the White House. This time he was careful to avoid mistakes he made the last time. He was viewed as knowledgeable, if long-winded, during the debates. Despite this, he was behind the much more popular candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He barely polled at all. He decided to drop his bid after a terrible showing at the Iowa Caucus.

However, after it was clear that Obama had clinched the Democratic nomination, he approached Biden with the offer to be his running mate. Biden accepted. He ended up staying rather low-profile during the campaign. He was overshadowed by the Republican vice presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, plus the Obama campaign was afraid of Joe just being Joe might lead to some bad gaffes.

The Obama-Biden ticket would go on to win the 2008 election. Biden was sworn-in as vice president in January. During his vice presidency, he sought to be involved in the administration as an important advisor, but not to create an overly-powerful (as he saw it) vice presidency like his predecessor, Dick Cheney.

Overall I found this to be a good biography of Joe Biden. A good explanation of the major events in his life. There is nothing too detailed, but I felt I learned a lot about the man currently serving as Vice President of the United States. I would recommend this to people interested in learning about Joe Biden.

(JOE BIDEN) A Life of Trial and Redemption by Witcover, Jules(Author)Hardcover{Joe Biden: A Life of Trial and Redemption} on01-Oct-2010
My wife and I have just finished reading the book--JOE BIDEN, by Jules Witcover. To call this biography of the Vice President, fascinating, would be an understatement. It is much more than that.
It kept us both, in turn, glued to the pages, as each facet in the life of this likable, yet complex, individual unfolds. From growing up as an average American boy to being elected as the youngest United States Senator where he had an outstanding career, earning the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
Witcover tells this story in an easy readable style, leaving out none of the details. The ups and downs of a life--the tragedies, the successes, the happy times, the challenges during a forty year career as a public figure. It is the first authentic look we get of Joe Biden and his family. Page after page he becomes real to us and through the pen of an experienced and talented journalist, the rumors and myths are
brushed aside until we see the complete picture of a truly remarkable man.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the inside story of why and how dedicated and honest plain people accomplish great deeds within the Washington of today.

This is in fact the updated version for those of you with Kindles. Four chapters that take you from the campaign right through the election. Its funny because you can tell exactly where the original book ended even if you never read it. Very detailed, maybe too much but worth the money.

Until the definitive life of Joe Biden is written, this respectful but not fawning biography will have to do. Balanced and solid, but hardly penetrating. Biden deserves better.

Joe Biden is the real deal. What you see is what you get. He is extremely versed on foreign affairs, domestic politics, you name it. I would recommend this book to anyone considering the candidates in the upcoming election. Perhaps the third time's the charm!

The book itself is good. It's an interesting piece on the Vice President, even if it sometimes is too sympathetic to him. Biden has had an interesting life, and seems to actually care about those around him. At times, he's been wealthy, at times, he's been poor. It's a varied experience of someone who failed and learned from failures. I came away thinking that it was too bad the Dems picked Obama as Biden probably would've been a better President than Obama.

But my big beef is that the Kindle edition is a full $6 more than the hardcover edition, which has entered the remainder bin and is selling for $9.37. But the Kindle edition is $14.99. The book is worth $14.99, but if the paper form gets reduced, the Kindle price should be reduced similarly. I bought a Kindle to save on books, and I have for the most part. But I lost $5 by reading this on the Kindle instead of buying the hardcover book!

Again, it's a good read that's worth the $14.99, but I would've given it 4 stars if the price had been equitable.

I have long been a "fan" of vice president, joe biden. This man is one of a very few politicians that to me is very honest. This book confirms that for me and i hope others would read it and share in my convictions.

Jules Witcover is a great writer. He apparently is well known by Biden and others. After reading this I put some of his other books on my kindle. Any book written by Witcover is well worth reading.

Balanced, well researched and detailed. A very good effort at depicting the the person, his development over a very long career serving his country. Biden has made and is still making a tremdous contribution to his country and the world. His grasp of world affairs and the needs of ordinary people is matched by his courage ,empathy, integrity and humility. It took a big man with real humility to put his enormous energy, experience and life time of international, and national political networking at the disposal of a much younger and inexperienced President and to serve him loyally for eight years. Let's hope his country supports and appreciates him as he works to help them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good narrative account of long tenure of Joe Biden in Democratic Party Politics

Joe Biden entered the senate in 1972 when liberal giants such as Hubert Humphrey and Geroge Mcgovern were still members and Conservative Southern Democrats had not yet morphed into Republicans. Witcover a veteran reporter shows that after a modest upbringing and family tragedy with the death of his first wife and daughter in a car accident Biden became a leading member of the senate concerned with the nuts and bolts of legislation in the chamber. His presidential ambitions were seemingly dealt a fatal blow with the 1988 primary campaign in which he suffered accusations of being a plagiarizer of other speeches.Biden still maintained a high reputation in the senate with a strong input in domestic and foreign affairs. As a standard bearer of the traditional new deal/great society wing of the party Biden proved a strong choice as VP candidate for Obama with his folksy campaign style and experience. The book only covers the start of the Biden Vice presidency but his a fair and balanced record of an iconic Democratic party figure.

A very straightforward recitation of the facts with little insight beyond he talks too much and is prone to saying the wrong thing sometimes. Maybe it's the cynic in me but surely anyone who has spent as much time in the senate has more to them than just that. Would like a little more questioning of motives, statements and alternative viewpoints. Plus the writing is rather boring.
