About the Author
Michelle Markel loves writing narrative nonfiction. She’s the author of Brave Girl,which won the Bank Street Flora Stieglitz Straus Award and the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award for Younger Children, and was also chosen as an NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor Book. Some of her recent titles include Hillary Rodham Clinton: Some Girls Are Born to Lead (on the Amelia Bloomer Project List of feminist literature) and Balderdash!: John Newbery and the Boisterous Birth of Children’s Books. LeUyen Pham has voted in every single presidential election since she turned eighteen. - Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2016Bought this for my 7 year old son who, after reading it, said simply: "wow, I didn't know she had done all that!" It doesn't go into a lot of detail but there is a timeline at the end and, more importantly, it sets her accomplishments in context of her time. Perhaps giving a commencement speech as student speaker at college doesn't seem significant to us now but at the time, it was groundbreaking. And her history of service is truly inspirational.
Based on reading the angry reviews posted here, perhaps we can't say that equality has progressed all that far for some of us. Still, I would urge those reviewers (not readers apparently) to consider why there isn't a children's book on Donald Trump. Rather than complain, write. You may have to skim over quite a bit to make it palatable.

While she may not be our president because she did not get the electoral college, she did win the popular vote by almost 3 million votes, and she did work very hard till be very bitter end. "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat." If you can put aside your politics, read this as the story of a bright intelligent woman who has worked hard and gone where few have. Of course there were other amazing women before her and thank heavens will be others after her, but this book is about one person and the writing is focused and poetic. It's not inspiring and lacks emotional connection. I can't figure out who the audience is supposed to be. Certainly not a 4 to 8 year old. Nothing about the language is relatable, special or appropriate. The text consists of a series of unexplained superficial fact statements using phrases and images you'd never use to teach a child about Hillary Clinton, sexism, public service or the world. It poorly raises questions for a young child/girl that you don't want to answer. What's a prestigious East Coast college Mommy? Are thick glasses and a sailor dress bad? What's a violent demonstration? What's the war in Vietnam? What's a top-notch law firm? Mommy, what's a threatening mob and a bulletproof vest? Get ready to explain abuse of young women and "the attack on September 11" to your 5- or 6-year-old. "Her speech was blacked out by the Chinese government." Mommy, why did Hillary know that reporters would make fun of her legs when she ran for president in 2007? By the way it ends before the second campaign and nomination. The one star is because no stars is not an option. I don't know what to do with it; I wouldn't even donate it to a library. My quotes don't convey how awful it is; read before you purchase. PS I am a professional mother and grandmother whose daughters were not allowed to be cheerleaders (my only rule), I write, I love good writing and I love Hillary.

My four-year-old is fascinated by the differences in society in the 1950's and today. While she only understands parts of the book, she is inspired by a girl who did things that boys said she couldn't do. The negative reviews are infuriating. She's a great leader, because she has accomplished so much in her lifetime, doing things women have never been able to do. She doesn't have to be elected President to be a great role model for children, especially young girls.

Her mama says she now reads it every night, and while sometimes she'll let her parents read the book to her, more often she creates her own stories around the pictures and the moral of each story she creates is, "girls can do anything!" When my sister-in-law told me this I cried and was so proud!

I want my daughters and my son to learn about working hard in the face of doubt and discrimination, about fighting for the rights of women and other minorities, and about the importance of kindness and grace in the face of fear and intolerance. If you are looking for a children's book with a strong role model for young girls and all future feminists, this is a great choice.

Hillary Clinton hat es leider nicht als Präsidentin ins weiße Haus geschafft. Dieses Buch aber hat es zum Glück in unser Bücherregal geschafft. Es zeigt in hübsch gemalten Bildern den Werdegang von Hillary Clinton. Die Bilder sind einfach phantastisch gezeichnet und sehr hübsch coloriert. Ich lese es mit meiner Tochter und habe es meiner Nichte geschenkt. Es ist so motivierend zu sehen, was Hillary Clinton alles geschafft und geleistet hat. Ein ganz tolles Bilderbuch für Mädchen, die gerade Englisch lernen und ein immer noch tolles Buch für working mums.

I'm not kidding, you will laugh yourself silly at the tone of this odd little memento of 2016. If you bought one of those red hats, you need this book to finish off your political collection.
It almost invokes hagiographies of the Soviet era with its over-earnest depiction of Hillary Clinton, now elevated to the Saviour Of All Women Everywhere.
In a sane world it would be included in school libraries as how not to write a political biography. You can't fault its artistry or commitment to trying to rewrite reality, though. It's so mad, it is best read in the spirit it was written, and even then you are left wondering: why? It spirals into self-parody and back to the point where you'd be forgiven for thinking it was satire published to discredit its subject. Not a true history of the world by any means, "Girls, you can be who you want to be, in your own minds" seems to be the skewed message?
