About the Author

Tom Sharpe was born in 1928. He did his National Service in the Marines before going to South Africa in 1951 where he was a social worker, and a teacher in Natal. From 1963 to 1972 he was a lecturer in History at the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology.

Of all the books Sharpe has written his character Henry Wilt is the most enduring. No matter where he goes or what he does poor Wilt seems to attract trouble and misunderstanding. Wilt in Nowhere shows that even when Henry tries to disappear and spend time alone bad luck and hilarious confusion pursues him.
I've been a huge fan of Tom Sharpe for years and as an aspiring writter myself I aim to emulate his style of far-fetched, creative humour.

For those fans of Tom Sharpe's Wilt books, the title of this entry in the series should be "Wilt Is Nowhere". It starts out promisingly enough with Henry's Eva packing the quads up to visit an aunt in America and him being left home alone. However, from there, the story breaks up and never quite comes together. Tom Sharpe is generally a master at introducing characters and situations in his Wilt stories, lining them up like dominoes so they can be knocked down at the finale, ending up in the unlikeliest of directions. However, he doesn't quite pull it off this time. Part of the problem is that Wilt is absent from the story for a good part of the book. Eva and the quads aside, it lacks the usual fun of reading about Wilt's knack for landing himself in the fire when trying to extricate himself from the frying pan.

I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews here but I read the book and I couldn't stop laughing (a few times my wife had to shush me because we were in public). A bitingly sharp (no pun intended) satire of the NHS (anyone who has had to deal with the NHS can well sympathise), Polytechs, English inner cities and the type of Republicans ruling the roost today seen through the hapless Wilt and his wife Eva. Every page is vintage Sharpe and the humour shines through with vigour.

I discovered Tom Sharpe in a W.H. Smith in the tube station at Leicester Square probably 25 years ago and fell immediately in love. So when I happened to discover this book, and several other newer ones, I was ecstatic. Yes, other reviewers commented that the humor was forced and not up to snuff, but I couldn't pass up the chance. Alas, they were right. This, and the other later efforts, including The Gropes and The Middens, just don't live up to his earlier works. I cringe even to say it, but I was bored, had to force myself to finish and can't remember a single out-loud chuckle let alone the side-splitting, laugh-till-you-cry hilarity of his classics. My suggestion, go reread The Throwback or Wilt or Blott on the Landscape and revel in Sharpe at his best.
