Business and Competitive Analysis: Effective Application of New and Classic Methods 2nd Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Meet any business or competitive analysis challenge: deliver actionable business insights and on-point recommendations that enterprise decision makers can’t and won’t ignore! All you need is one book: Business and Competitive Analysis, Second Edition. This generation’s definitive guide to business and competitive analysis has now been thoroughly updated with additional methods, applications and examples. Craig S. Fleisher and Babette E. Bensoussan begin with a practical primer on the process and context of business and competitive analysis: how it works, how to avoid pitfalls, and how to communicate results. Next, they introduce their unique FAROUT method for choosing the right tools for each assignment. The authors then present dozens of today’s most valuable analysis methods. They cover “classic” techniques, such as McKinsey 7S and industry analysis, as well as emerging techniques from multiple disciplines: economics, corporate finance, sociology, anthropology, and the intelligence and futurist communities. You’ll find full chapters outlining effective analysis processes; avoiding pitfalls; communicating results; as well as drill-downs on analyzing industries, competitive positioning, business models, supply chains, strategic relationships, corporate reputation, critical success factors, driving forces, technology change, cash flow, and much more. For every method, Fleisher and Bensoussan present clear descriptions, background context, strategic rationales, strengths, weaknesses, step-by-step instructions, and references. The result is a book every analyst, strategist, and manager can rely on – in any industry, for any challenge.

I picked up the Kindle edition of the book and it's as good as the paper edition, own the 1st edition in paper. Sometimes I note that folks complain about the Kindle edition in terms of accuracy. This Kindle edition is very readable. It's a must have for competitive analysis. It's not only for students but also for the professional. Have used it in M&A activities and in my day to to day job to better understand the industry, quality of supply chain and business model. From a structured perspective of performing the analysis, to the FAROUT method of evaluating the adequacy of tools, to the tools themselves this book demonstrates why it's truly an outstanding reference book. The book takes and improves on the venerable SWOT analysis, provides structure around an analysis of competing hypothesis to business model analysis, lynchpin analysis and much more. The take away for me is that the tools could be used in a CI or other role on a day to day basis. I certainly have.

I recommend this book as a compilation of competitive models that have passed the test of time, with an update for a more updated version. The reason why I do not put 5 stars is because in the new version it was eliminted some models that was in the first edition that was very important to keep.

I have owned and used the very first edition of this material as a textbook in the Graduate Certificate of Competitive Intelligence program at Drexel University under the direction of Professor Kathy Shelfer (now at St. John University). It struck me then as *THE classic must-have* for every intelligence practitioner for three reasons, in my opinion: 1) It brought the most important business analysis, thinking, theory and practice together back to the basics and with a standardized entry for each tool; 2) it leveled the playing field for all the analysis techniques because it did not make any claim that one tool is superior to another, unlike other books that would seek to promote BCG, Win/Loss or whatever else I have consulted. Here, I do agree that the business problem/opportunity at hand should sponsor the analysis tool to be used, considering obtainable data and future orientation for action ; 3) it provided an independent and superior method for the user to identify the more applicable analysis tool based on specific action-oriented problem criteria (Future-oriented, Accurate, Resource-efficient, Objective, Useful, Timely = FAROUT). Indeed, the FAROUT method/chart that empowers a-n-y-o-n-e to select an appropriate analysis tool and move on to solving problems, is also easy to use.

Of course, when thinking and/or analysis become the common or distributed abilities among competitors (and humans), the winners are those that chose the best analytic framework and mindset to the appropriate race and avoid analysis paralysis. These three core principles, to my delight, have been maintained throughout the second edition and now the third.

Analysis tool application to problems, now, has a very low barrier for entry, and has further been improved to meet the current data-driven environment we live, collaborate and compete in --with specific case examples. As Business Intelligence and Data Analysis folks say, business-critical problem solving abilities come before charts, visualization and decision making. And I highly recommend this material for whomever needs to sharpen their thinking abilities to address important problems and opportunities.

While the book version is readily reachable on my desk, my kindle version follows me everywhere on my mobile.

Full disclosure: I won a copy of this text at the 2015 SCIP Annual Conference, but honestly, I would have bought this if I hadn't won it. I initially used (and still have) the first edition in my CI classes during my MBA. Back then, I was struck with how thorough Craig and Babette were, not only providing frameworks and tools for a multitude of CI analyses, but also providing ways to assess those tools, which ensures you are asking (and answering) the best questions for your project.

This updated version improves upon the first, and expands it a bit. I've recommended this book not only to all my fellow intelligence workers, but also to all my colleagues who are involved in critical business decisions. I consider this my analysis holy grail; there is a framework in here for almost every situation. Half the fun of reading through it is the realization that it's really a "choose your own adventure" of intelligence and business analysis techniques, where you can take their concepts and really mold them to your situation. Kudos to the authors for a sophomore edition that beats the original.

This book can be used at any level and has helped me look at competitive intelligence from several different angles. Fleisher does a great job at not only explaining methods to use to better understand the competitive landscape, he takes it a step further by giving examples and exercises to actually implement and put into practice. This book forces you to think on a strategic level and provides you the tools to plan for the future.

This is an absolutely outstanding text---whether you purchase it for academic use or for use in business. It covers every single type of analysis that a student or executive would ever hope to encounter or need---from the most fundamental types of analyses to the most complex. I used the First Edition first with undergrads then again at the graduate level. It is the only text that I recommend students buy and keep for future reference. Some of my former students have mentioned that it was invaluable as they pursued their MBA's or entered executive level careers. Fleisher and Bensoussan are to be commended for again authoring a superior business text.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition provides additional dimensions beyond comparison!

I thought Craig's and Babette's previous titles were without comparison, this one stands above that! Having consumed the previous two issues as well as the bite size versions in between, I thought it was impossible to improve. Not true. With the additions of the related key intelligence questions both Craig and Babette have experienced, a worked through example as well as the worksheets for all of the frameworks covered I definitely got the sense I was benefiting from both their experiences as well as the learnings from the range and number of analysts they have had the privilege and opportunity to have engaged through their respective lines of work. Even if you have enjoyed and benefited from their previous works, you will have missed out by not applying this one!
