Written for the more advanced Java developer, Image Processing in Java provides an excellent class library of 2-D image processing algorithms for Java, along with the mathematical underpinnings of how each works.

The author first looks at some of the performance issues when using Java for image processing and then covers user interfaces, such as menu and shortcut key processing and events in Java. Several classes from the author's class library (named Kahindu) come next, including his powerful ImageFrame class, which manages the details of storing and displaying.

After presenting image fundamentals, the book provides a variety of contrast and brightening/dimming algorithms. You learn how to work with file streams (which the author has encapsulated in his own classes for both the GZIP and PPM file formats) and about blurring, smoothing, image erosion, and dilation. More advanced sections cover topics such as edge detection while working with color images and rotating and shearing images.

Throughout this text, Lyon presents the theory and mathematics behind all these 2-D image processing topics, along with their implementation in his custom Java class library. This approach makes this book useful for the classroom or for self-study because the reader can see these image tools at work through the accompanying Java demonstrations. Certainly this book assumes some math background, but the code itself can be used by anyone seeking to get control of 2-D image processing in Java. --Richard Dragan

Has some value if you are willing to dig deep

Some of this book wastes space explaining the obvious, such as event processing and the AWT, and file processing in Java. There are many good books that explain these concepts much better than this one, and these topics are not really relevant to the meat of image processing algorithms any way. A good portion of the book that does have anything to do with image processing reads more like a user's manual of the author's image processing software, "Kahindu" than anything else. However, there are a few useful nuggets. For example, chapters ten and eleven on convolution-based edge detection and morphological filtering are not half bad. There are some good examples shown that drive home the material. Chapter 12 does a pretty good job of explaining boundary processing, with small bits of the author's actual code that fortunately reads like pseudocode and is somewhat instructive because of that fact. The author also bothers to accompany the pseudocode with the relevant equations. Chapter 13, entitled "Chromatic Light" explains subjects omitted by traditional image processing texts such as producing realistic brightness and darkness controls, and transformation between color spaces. There is also a pretty good treatment of the median cut algorithm - a method of color reduction - in this chapter. At the time I bought this book I had never seen this particular algorithm before, and the author's explanation did the trick for me, anyway. Chapter 14, which treats warping, is the most unique chapter of the book, since it discusses special effects in detail. Again, because the author uses basic Java and the AWT without the trappings of any of the special Java API's, his actual subroutines that are reproduced throughout the book are pretty easy to understand algorithmically speaking. Also, at the end of each chapter there are suggested projects for the reader to try that get you thinking about the details of image processing algorithms. As for the author's code that is included on the CD, I wouldn't recommend that anyone try to use it as is. The code structure is insane with layer after layer of inheritance that is really quite unnecessary. Instead, I suggest that you find the subroutines and algorithms that you require for your individual task and lift them from the source code with the help of the handy index of all Kahindu methods and fields that can be found in the back of the book. Everything from quicksort code to special effects is coded up and ready to go. Fortunately, "Kahindu" is really a very complete image processing software package, just not an organized or very well constructed one from a software engineering perspective. As for the book itself, it is an OK secondary reference for image processing algorithms as they are implemented in Java, just don't expect to learn the subject of image processing from this book alone. A good primary text for that purpose would be "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods.

Simple and Practical

I thought this book provided very clear examples of image processing programming. I have a significant amount of programming experience but no programming experience with imaging. I was able to follow all of his examples and translate them easily to my own project. Although some of the programming examples used conventions and styles that I probably would not have used, he explains them clearly and logically.
There were some typos or grammatical errors but they were not significant enough to detract from the information presented. Mr. Lyon's style is clearer and easier to read than most technical authors I have read. I recommend sending him an email pointing out the errors and asking that he hire a better proof-reader.

Not another everyday JAVA book

Well, I felt like adding a review after seeing that actually some people don't find the book of quality, for what I would call inconsistent reasons.
The book is a tremendous contribution to the JAVA world, and in short is unique in its content. Very rich in image processing algorithms of all flavors, at their finest quality. The text is surprisingly clear, the code implementation intuitive and easy to follow. I rarely find quality code that does quality things. Some algorithms that once required me to go through hard to understand microfilms or research papers, I find them here implemented and approached in a very elegant manner. Of course, you might have to adjust them a little if you're going to use them in your own code, but the work left is so trivial that I would call them "plug-n-play". You do not need to take care of porting any libraries to your platform, the code is pure JAVA. It is Kahindu. The classes are based on frames, dialogs, standard JDK, nothing can get simpler than that. You might find the GUI a bit messy if you are a graphics user or the everyday homepage applet writer, but for a programmer it should appear as common sense.
As conclusion, you DO NOT want to miss this book. Whether you are to instruct yourself, teach, use the code for yourself or just simply stare at some sweet algorithms, this book is a blast. Too bad there are very few books like that out there yet, hopefully this will change. As far as the price, you can consider it a donation from the author. Great great great.

Nuggets of goodness surrounded by...

I've found that the brief overview of practical techniques (such as convolution kernels) are useful.
Otherwise:
* The book formatting is terrible (pages are 3/4 blank sometimes in the middle of chapters)
* It appears unedited. Grammatical errors, especially ones where the error changes the meaning of the sentence (like leaving out the word NOT!) plague this book
* The author specifically chose Java as the implementation language, then proceeds to discuss the weaknesses of the language which he clearly does not understand. He offers the worst object model for image processing that I could have imagined. The code examples printed in the book are riddled with errors (though the code included on the CD-ROM may not... I haven't tested anything except for the Fourier Transform algorithm. I have no use for this book other than that algorithm, which is in fact why I bought it in the first place).
* The author is introduced as a teacher of Java, yet the code examples which deal with image processing are invariably wrapped around GUI classes. Who ever heard of an image sharpening algorithm extending java.awt.Frame?
If you are looking for a book that talks about different kinds of concepts, this book may be okay, but I'm sure there are better ones. If you want to use the code provided by this book in a production environment of any kind, you will need to copy-and-paste the appropriate code into a more sane and reusable structure before you begin.
