Meetings with Remarkable Men, G. I. Gurdjieff’s autobiographical account of his youth and early travels, has become something of a legend since it was first published in 1963. Right around the turn of the 20th century, G.I. Gurdjieff initiated a group of spiritual adventurers called the "Seekers of Truth." These intrepid intellectuals of every stripe crisscrossed Africa and Asia in search of the hidden mysteries of antiquity. In Meetings with Remarkable Men, Gurdjieff narrates their exploits while drawing portraits of these extraordinary figures (including one woman and a dog). Half travel journal, half autobiography, Meetings with Remarkable Men begins with Gurdieff's childhood, when he finds his book learning at odds with paranormal events that were self-evident but inexplicable through modern science. Later he discovers a map of "pre-sands Egypt" and evidence of the Sarmound Brotherhood, alleged keepers of ancient wisdom dating back four and a half millennia. He climbs the Himalayas, follows the Nile, and is led blindfolded to a mysterious monastery. In this book Gurdijeff tells the stories of his travels and adventures. What was shocking to me was that he conspicuously leaves out the most important part: the lessons learned. For example, he'll speak at great length about traveling over mountains to meet some wise man, etc. Then he'll say, for example, "In the end, we asked this great wise man what is the secret of life and what are the lessons you can teach us?" Then he says, no joke, "And I'll go into what he the answer was in a future book."

To me, after seeing that pattern about three times I put the book down realizing it was not what I was looking for. I'm seeking the answers and the lessons not the travel stories of his personal trials and tribulations.

Speaking of his personal stories, there is one shocking story about Gurdijeff working to make money for his travels. He recounts working for a man making figurines and selling them to tourists. He acts stupid so his boss will reveal his secret to him. He then steals the man's secrets and competes against him manufacturing and selling these same figurines. I was shocked at that behavior and his unrepentant admission of this dishonesty and betrayal. This made me call into question how moral and right-thinking is any man who would do something like that. Especially one who would recount it proudly in his travel memoirs. That is more of a personal opinion but I just thought I'd share it.

In conclusion, if you are looking for the travel stories of Gurdijeff and want to learn about how he went to meet these great men, earned money for his travels, met friends, etc. you would like this book. If you're seeking, as I am, the lessons he's learned and the philosophies these great men taught I would not recommend this book.

Superb Book. Some Brilliant Insights

I read this book many years ago, and was absolutely captivated by the book. I read it again after I bought it on the Kindle, and was a bit less captivated by the book. The section that I liked the most, was the one about his father. The four commandments of his father captured the crux of what we should all be about, as people. The next section that I liked, was the one about his teacher.

The rest of the sections are fantastic tales in themselves, and are very well told. This is why I give the book a four star rating. The writing style is much more accessible than the way that he wrote about Beelzebub's tales, and this is something that I like. I think that he made Beelzebub a bit too complex, that he made it complex for the sake of complexity.

I cannot say that I learned much from the book, barring the section on his father and teacher. But, the book is a joyous ride indeed. It is the story of a life fully lived.

Required reading for anyone interested in Gurdjieff

Gurdjieff's "meetings" shaped his life and his "Work". He gives us a fascinating insight into those people who were responsible for his development and approach to breaking through the "sleeping man". Anyone who reads this book will not only be amused by Gurdjieff's "wicked" sense of humor, they will be touched by his compassion for our suffering whether "intentional or not. I ordered it a month ago to read again after having done so 38 years ago. I also recommend James Moore's book, "Gurdjieff: A Biography - The Anatomy of a Myth". While at times a little difficult to read because of some of the "British English" idioms and such, Moore's book tries to paint a picture of Gurdjieff in relation to the times and people that were drawn to him. Drawn from interviews and documents, Moore succeeds in giving us insight to the man who still is a Myth and legend and whose influence still resonates around the world.

Truly an exceptional book

The book can be hard to read at times as it was written in a foreign language and translated into English. Having studied the Fourth Way for 6 years and practiced in Fourth Way groups, I find this is still one of the best and most motivating books on the subject. Gurdjieff goes over his life as a kid and people who had influence over him as he was growing up as well as into his travels throughout Asia searching for Truth. It is a fascinating adventure book discussing his travels, triumphs, failures, and personal weaknesses along the way. I appreciate the honesty in the book, as he doesn't pretend like most religious figures to be all perfect and show no faults. He comes across as very human with a lot of street smarts. You really need a lot of street smarts to survive out there, be it in the business world or whenever you have to run your own business. A number of people call him a con man, however I would like for naysayers to name one human on this earth who has never done a wrong thing. Of course, it would be some President in their totally deluded minds. The point is everyone has done wrong things and Gurdjieff was very honest with his readers and it was good to see inside his psyche. Without this understanding, one can misinterpret his teachings in the wrong way.

A tale of an extraordinary life

After reading Ouspenskys book and the Early Talks I was hesitating to buy this one, but this turned out to be a very enjoyable read. Gurdjeff is a really good storyteller, the only boring chapter was the introduction, the rest of the book I found to be very fascinating and insightful as to the question who the person was.
Still, I would have preferred if he would have relayed some more about the peoples from whom he learned his knowledge, and if he would have presented this knowledge as well as for example he does about the occasion when he met a Persian dervish who criticized his yogic practices. The book were much better if he would have included more such interludes, instead he focuses on talk about his friends and companions who actually are not very remarkable at all, they just happened to be his friends.
One more minus: the book's cover is a really lame work of art.
