About the Author

Amy Chua is the John M. Duff Professor of Law at Yale Law School. Her most recent book (co-authored with Jed Rubenfeld) is The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America, published in February 2014 by The Penguin Press. Chua's first book, World on Fire, was a New York Times bestseller and selected by The Economist as one of the best books of 2003; while her second book, Day of Empire, was a critically acclaimed Foreign Affairs bestseller. Chua lives with her husband, two daughters, and two Samoyeds in New Haven, Connecticut.

As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.

Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

Learned a lot from her book

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.

I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

Amy caught a lot of flack for being so hard on her kids, but the key to this book is that she admits that with the younger daughter, that method didn't work. Even so, Lulu learned the most valuable lesson - determination, focus, and discipline. I like that Amy is honest about how she behaved and why, and I like that she admits that she knew when she was getting it wrong, and couldn't make herself course correct.
I treat my son with the same expectations that Amy had in the book, I'm not mean like Amy was, but I expect certain things from him because I know he has the capability to do everything that is asked, perfectly (with practice, that is). His attitude has changed too. He understands that practice, on math or clarinet, actually works. If only for this one thing, this book was completely worth the read.

I found the writing to be very intelligent,witty,and insightful. Brutally honest; I found myself agreeing with her perceptions regarding the way some "Westerners" raise their children. This book is a very entertaining read,but I learned a lot from it,too. It takes a very brave and strong woman to sacrifice being liked by her children, in order to give them the gift of being exceptional human beings,and having experiences their mall-going peers will never have. Having your children not appreciate the love it took to do what was best for them( even while fighting your own doubts),is an exquisite pain to which most good parents can relate; and is well conveyed in this book. I put this book on my "wish list" after seeing an inept interview on the "today" show. I "got" what the author was trying to say,and thought she handled the bashing from an interviewer that obviously didn't read the book,quite well. I admired the author,and I'm glad I finally got around to reading her book.

More Chinese than the Chinese in China!

This is a delightful book, and the most interesting that I have read in a while. It is also a curious book. In terms of language and writing style, this book by the Yale law professor is American in outlook. However, the obstinancy that she expresses is definitely traditional Chinese.

I thought I knew Chinese parents. I had two; my son has two. And I live in Hong Kong, China. Nevertheless, I must say that Amy Chua tops all the Chinese parents that I have known (and I have known many, from different generations). Although I disagree largely with her parenting model, I enjoy reading the fascinating tale that Amy tells about how she drove her daughters to fulfil her vision of achievement and perfection. The reader notices early on in the book that Amy's younger daughter, Lulu, is not one who would bend to her mother's will. Therein lies the suspense that has the reader glued to the book. Most interesting that it took an equally obstinate younger daughter and two dogs to deter the Tiger Mother.

The book is also thought-provoking. While reading, I have constantly reflected on the deficiency of the Chinese model of parenting, as described by Amy in her personal account. The model is one that is very effective in training skills and crafts. Amy's two daughters are evidently talented musical artists, helped to a great extent by the ceaseless drilling that their mother has put them through. Such apprentice drilling has its limits, though. The apprentice is not taught or encouraged to think. For generations, China has trained its people to be good with multiplication tables, and skilled with musical instruments, in sports or carpentry. But such drilling only produces skilled craftsmen (or craftspersons, to be politically correct). Creative and critical thinking has been discouraged, if not entirely ignored. 'Ah-ha! But the Tiger Mother's parenting model cannot produce scientists,' I would say to myself as I read through the book. This thought is confirmed towards the end of the book, when Amy talks about the exception in her family: her rebellious scientist father.

The Conclusion and Afterword in Amy's book are superb. They bring the suspenseful jouney of the Tiger Mother to a fitting end. For the benefit of potential readers, I will not give away the ending here.
