Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Anderson claims that humans are increasingly affecting the "natural" evolution of living things. We clear forests, breed animals and cross-breed plants, use pesticides and herbicides, and maintain gene and sperm banks and practice other forms of biotechnology. By his estimate, each day we eliminate one species and this rate will grow to one per hour (even as we create new ones). Anderson believes we must govern the biosphere rationally and not let massive change just happen. He doesn't preach, but he advances such notions as "global culture," "biopolitics," and "bioethics" to help us confront what is happening. He deals not with answers but with issues and new ways of looking at them. Essential for public and academic libraries. Daniel LaRossa, Connetquot P.L., Bohemia, N.Y.

This is a book I feel all intelligent people should be aware of.
Yes, humans influence climate. Of course we do. We've been altering the environment and natural selection since we first lit the prairies of Africa in the earliest moments of our evolution. WTA argues that it's about time we recognize the impacts of our activities and start to deal with them utilizing responsible governance.
One of the important notions that come from this understanding is that there really is no such thing as "wildness" or "nature" without the inclusion of our species in the equation. We have already impacted the ecological reality of our planet in significant ways, and it is within our "power" to continue to do so whether we acknowledge it or not.
I have been moved by this book, (and others) to feel we need to be thinking about what Heaven on Earth can look like, and start doing what we can to get us there. Ultimately it's OUR responsibility.
I believe that's the freedom of choice our Creator has given US.
    Namaste
