Editorial Reviews
Review
"A well-researched, readable treatise.... Recommended for history buffs and anyone interested in methods of genealogical research."--Booklist
"Nagel examines this powerful, often troubled clan with the same searching, generous spirit he brought to the Adams family...A multigenenerational saga as ambitious, (and) accomplished...as the American dynasty it chronicles."--Kirkus Reviews
"Contains a wealth of information....Tells us much about the education of Robert E. Lee."--Wilson Library Bulletin
"[A] splendidly written, poignant, well-researched portrait of a notable clan through approximately 230 years."--Publishers Weekly

Nagel has a couple of the Lee's confused with each other, and is wrong about the premise of what happened to William Lee 1st; as documents written by family historian, Edmund Jennings Lee, prove. Much of Nagel's information was provided to him, by "The Society of the Lee's of Virginia", an organization that now seems more concerned about 'who will be at the cotillion', rather than the genealogical accuracy, of it's members. Overall, Nagel has done a wonderful job, describing the day to day lives of Lee Family members, that we never would have otherwise, learned about.

Oxford University Press used to beck own for its academic books and the quality of its books.
In terms of quality, this book doesn’t have much to offer. It’s printed on cheap paper and my home printer can reproduce photographs of better quality that are found in this book. Returned.

I love reading historical books, but, this one had so many generations and so many people with the same name at the same time it was very confusing. This was not the writers fault, it was just real history. It was a really interesting book if you could keep the people and the homes straight. Fortunately the homes were all named, but, the people kept moving from home to home and back again!

My name is Lee, 5 stars was a given. I gave away my copy I had years ago and decided to purchase it again plus send a copy to my son.

This is a history book filling in the figures from American history that many of us are familiar with without the depth that this book provides. I am reading this book slowly and haven't finished it yet. I bought it because I understand my own ancestors are mentioned but I'm enjoying the book for the amount of information that wasn't in my school history books.

My Lee family was thought to tie into Richard Lee's but I don't yet see where. However, since I'm writing my own bio of 12 generations of our Lee Tribe, thought it good to see this book's content. It's well done and glad we now have it in our library. Thank you Mr Nagel.

The Lees genealogy is very good and their history is outstanding. I was very happy to receive this book for my personal library collection. Others who like history should read this book. And those who have Lees in their genealogy should also read this book. Thank You.
