Editorial Reviews
Review
"A useful addition to ethnic studies."--School Library Journal
"Chapters are richly illustrated with old family photos as well as images drawn from posters, paintings, and prints. Many interesting sidebars also enliven the account. The story is woven from oral histories of ordinary people as well as those whose names became familiar across America."--Illinois
Heritage Association Newsletter
"This volume touches on all German-speaking comers, from within and from far beyond the borders of the former Bismarck Reich."--Society for German American Studies Newsletter
"[A] delightful book...valuable...outstanding."--German Genealogical Digest
"A uniformly interesting series. Lavishly illustrated.... Well worth a close reading."--The New York Times Book Review
"Very well organized. Text, sidebars, and excerpts from actual diaries, along with excellent photographs, present an interesting, well-balanced view of the German experience... It can be read in one or two evenings, but leaves a lasting impression."--Journal of the West Manhattan

I am writing a genealogical history for a family member and its focus is social history - the immigrant story, how they saw the US, how they coped and adjusted. This book was perfect with lots of letters/writings by actual German immigrants that had come from different areas (Russia, Prussia, Austria, Bavaria, etc.) and settled in different areas of the US. It presents great information about life details in an easily digestible format with good writing and lots of photos. Excellent resource.

The Hoobler's are national treasures. Everything they write is honest, interesting and insightful. This is part of a serious of various immigrant groups. I don't know how much children will like it but it is helpful when they study American history. Or want to know about their own heritage.
My grandchildren, boys who are not social scientists, liked to dip into it. I have several in the series and enjoyed each.
