Amazon is selling remainder stock! Dissappointing print job, and the maps are unreadable. Great text otherwise!

I still can't believe this, but Amazon sent me a remainder copy with the price cut out of the book jacket and in not new condition! I called customer service and got a replacement, and was sent another remainder book with the price cut out but in slightly better shape! What gives Amazon? I am tremendously disappointed with you. It's not like this was pointed out or sold at an inexpensive remainder book price!

The maps in this book are too generally too small and look like third or fourth generation xeroxes. About half of the maps are unreadable because the tone of the dark grey map areas and the black lettering are almost exactly the same.

The book itself is a terrific read and study, and I would have rated it five stars except for it's shoddy printing (it does have nice acid free paper however). I've also read J.M. Roberts "History of Europe" and greatly admire his work. This is a great one volume history of the world, and I would highly recommend it, except it would have been nice to have readable maps to support the text. Oxford usually does a nice printing job, but here they have failed miserably.

new edition has terrible production quality

I've owned the 1993 edition for many years but a recent roof leak ruined my copy so I ordered the new edition. Big mistake: the contents are excellent but the fourth edition is printed on trashy paper that you can see right through, and the illustrations and beautiful photos in the 93 edition are ALL GONE. Get the older edition for a lot less money and you'll have a much higher quality printing. If you really want to cover the last couple decades, get some other book - maybe Robert's History of the 20th century.

The book is going back on Monday....

So far my boyfriend has read 8 and a half pages since it came and he thinks its pretty good. Interesting read for anyone wanting a sudden knowledge of world history, the basics and general knowledge. Maybe he could get some questions right on "Who wants to be a Millionaire" after reading it, but in the mean time, he is enjoying it.

I bought this book to learn about World History, in order to comprehend todays world a bit better. Last night I gave up. I made it to page 429. I scanned ahead to WWII to see if it would improve. It did not. I am 62, and have an advanced degree. The reading is just incomprehensible. As others have stated you have to read some paragraphs several times to understand what the author is trying to say. It is obtuse to the nth degree. An example: he uses the words "Anatolia" and "Levant" without defining them anywhere in the entire book. I learned more from looking up these words online and reading about them in a miniscule fraction of the time I've spent reading the book. The maps are atrocious. All in grayscale and extremely difficult to tell one gray shade from another. The text on most of the maps is unreadable. I do not recommend this book.

Adequate -- But Distressingly "Correct" at the End

As far as I can tell, this is the ONLY history of the world available in one volume. (Penguin's is just an update of this volume -- about which, more at the end.)

Roberts does a serviceable, even creditable, job of "covering the waterfront"; and I enjoyed seeing disparate pieces of world history fall into place as I read it. What some reviewers see as his Euro-centrism seems to me to be simply his awareness that it is Europe's expansion across the globe that gives us world history in the first place. And European culture is the only culture to date with a genuine interest in exploring and understanding foreign cultures. Within the frame of the European roots of world historiography, Roberts generally describes other cultures clearly and tells their histories sympathetically.

As for Roberts' writing, it will do. Occasionally it shines. More often, it gets the basic story told -- plainly, accurately, generally conventionally. One reviewer complained that Roberts didn't define words like "Anatolia" and "the Levant"; but I figure that's why God made Wikipedia. Also I think it is the reader's ordinary duty to keep a dictionary closeby.

Throughout the book, however, Roberts struck me as a-religious at best and secularist. For the most part, I could live with his bias; and occasionally, he seemed to me to fight it with a special effort here and there to fairly describe religious concerns. However, along the way, I got tired of clauses like this: ". . . but even if most of humanity rests undisturbed in traditional pieties and superstition, science, technology and the improvements they bring make it harder to stay in the familiar ruts." (p. 1027)

Over the last few chapters -- especially the chapters dealing with topics after World War II -- Roberts' biases seem to me to deepen into outright prejudices. (And lo and behold, his prejudices are utterly and predictably "politically correct.")

Most particularly, he seems to me at the end to be virulently anti-semitic. He selectively includes the oddest details to tell against the state of Israel. He offers not a touch of criticism of Islamist extremism. And more generally, throughout the final chapters, he is recurrently anti-American, anti-religious, statist, secularist, and elitist. The European Union seems to him to mark the apex of forward-thinking political development. He accepts the theory of global warming without question.

Ultimately, Roberts seemed to me intellectually dishonest. No one who is thoughtful and knowledgeable can authentically espouse every orthodoxy of liberal opinion without an independent thought breaking in somewhere along the way. When a writer appears to do so, his reader cannot help but guess that he is being more attentive to his market than to his material.

Roberts is certainly knowledgeable, but perhaps not so thoughtful. That may be the root of the problem. Unlike such historians as Gibbon (for example), Roberts gives us very little in the way of personal reflection or passionate analysis. His history of the world is ultimately more a chronicle than an understanding.

Nonetheless, most of the way through the book, the chronicle suited my needs. I wanted a competent overview; and Roberts gave me one. It looks like there isn't another one available.

If, at the end, I found Roberts' political correctness obnoxious, I think I've also found a way to offset it. I've begun reading Paul Johnson's "Modern Times"; and from the very first page of "Modern Times," I find myself in the company of a thinker. Very refreshing after working through all 1,200 pages of Roberts' tome! (Too bad that there is not such a work as Johnson's to cover world history as a whole.)

NOTE: Re: Penguin's update of Johnson's work. I've read the end of the update; and it is clearly more of the worst of Roberts. The value of both works seems to me to lie in their coverage of world history through World War II. After that, liberal cliches and group-think take over.
