Deciphering Sun Tzu: How to Read The Art of War 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
His comprehensive analysis of Sun Tzu, based on a close reading of the Chinese sources, also reconstructs the philosophy, Taoist methodology and worldview that effectively form the cornerstones of Chinese strategic thinking, which are arguably as relevant today as at any moment in history.
Yuen's innovative reading and analysis of Sun Tzu within and from a Chinese context is a new way of approaching the strategic master's main concepts, which he compares with those of Clausewitz, Liddell-Hart and other Western strategists.
Deciphering Sun Tzu offers illuminating analysis and contextualization of The Art of War in a manner that has long been sought by Western readers and opens new means of getting to grips with Chinese strategic thought.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2023I have been studying Sunzi Bing Fa for almost 25 years. As a non-Mandarin speaker, I unfortunately must rely on English translations and commentary. This book is, without a doubt, one of most important and timely contributions that I have encountered. Not an easy read, but it is most certainly beautifully written.
I emphatically recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the difference between Chinese and Western strategic thought.
Absolutely brilliant book!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2015"Improvement" books don't hold a candle to this inscrutable trip into the web of scholarly thought of the ancient. This is history at its best!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2019Good read
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2015A must read for military professionals and anyone interested in strategy.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2016On time, as described.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2019This book is written using abstract language, so it's hard to know what the author is talking about or walk away with any knowledge.
I remain unimpressed with both Chinese philosophy or Sun Tzu; the most famous examples of both seem rather trite, with equivalent ideas found throughout European culture. Most of the book consists of restating the two same ideas over and over: Yin and Yang, and the rather obvious claim that you can win without fighting. Both ideas can be found in Western culture, too, so it's not clear that the Chinese insight is very original.
I hated, hated this book.

A bit short but beats Americanized readings of the classic anyday.

Excellent! Thank you.

The author argues that to properly understand what Sun Zi has written, we need to understand the philosophical assumptions and underpinnings in his words. I think the author makes that argument successfully, and that is also why this book takes some effort to work through.
If you are truly keen on better understanding The Art of War, if you are a fan of John Boyd's thinking, this book is worth your time and effort.
