About the Author

Jamie Woodward is Professor of Physical Geography at The University of Manchester. He has published widely on Quaternary environmental change and human activity in ice age environments, and has extensive field experience in the Mediterranean region and in the Nile Valley. He is the Co-Editor of Geoarchaeology: An International Journal and is the Quaternary Science and Geomorphology Editor for the Journal of the Geological Society of London. He has recently co-authored four chapters and edited The Physical Geography of the Mediterranean for OUP (2009).

Great book, but know what to expect in terms of content.

The larger first half of this book constitutes an overview of the historical development of the study of glacial geology. It is an interesting read, in terms of narrative, and gives some context for the current scientific paradigm, but may belabor the read for those more interested in current understanding of the Quaternary period and the current science. There is also some interesting undertones with regard to the impact of religion, and the Bible in particular, on the shifting paradigms leading up to the current model.

The latter half of the book is more of a scientific overview of glaciation and interglacial periods. Again, the primary focus is on the geological components of the Quaternary period, with some later discussion of anthropogenic impacts on natural climate variability.

There is minimal, if any, focus on ice age biology and, for example, North American megafauna. If that is what you are looking for, this book will likely disappoint.

A good overview and a good read overall. Just make sure that you have appropriate expectations with regard to the substantive content going in.

I liked this book because the basics of climate change are more understandable if explained in the context of a time period. This way it's easier to see what happened in our most recent glaciation and current interglacial because you can make comparisons with earlier times. I also liked learning about the history of the study of ice ages and the controversies over the last several hundred years. All the historical build up helps the shock effect of the graph that shows the drastic rise in CO2 in the last few years. I understand it all much better now thanks to this book and I hope that his vocabulary definitions will help with the next book I read on climate change.

This slim volume is a fantastically good introduction to our current understanding of the "ice ages" of the last 800,000 years, the researchers who played key roles in unraveling this history, and how they do it. For years, I've struggled trying to understand articles and reports on climate that refer to "paleoclimate" and what past glacial periods tell us about our current situation. This book is a great introduction. But note: In the Kindle edition, the crucial charts & diagrams are too small to read. Also, the book has wonderful early chapters on early (1800's) debates and research, but rushes through the more recent and important research. Also, the author makes no reference to the exciting new research being done with cave deposits (isotope analysis of stalagmites to understand changes in monsoons). That said, I wish I'd found this book sooner.

Nice, concise, not overly technical, account of the most recent Ice Age. I like the "Very Short Introduction" series, but the editors pretty much give the authors leave to write whatever they would like. Sometimes the result is a bit of a one-sided account. Given the relevance of this topic to current wrangling over climate policy, I was afraid that this book might be polemical. In fact, it isn't. So far as I can tell, Woodward plays it down the middle.
