The book humbles the reader with a history of system failure, and still rings true today. It should be required reading for technology leaders and those involved with crafting public policy of IT.

This book is much more than a collection of computer mishaps; it is a serious, technically oriented book written by one of the world's leading experts on computer risks. The book summarizes many real events involving computer technologies and the people who depend on those technologies, with widely ranging causes and effects. It considers problems attributable to hardware, software, people, and natural causes. Examples include disasters (such as the Black Hawk helicopter and Iranian Airbus shootdowns, the Exxon Valdez, and various transportation accidents); malicious hacker attacks; outages of telephone systems and computer networks; financial losses and many other strange happenstances (squirrels downing power grids, and April Fool's Day pranks).
Computer-Related Risks addresses problems involving reliability, safety, security, privacy, and human well-being. It includes analyses of why these cases happened and discussions of what might be done to avoid recurrences of similar events. It is readable by technologists as well as by people merely interested in the uses and limits of technology. It is must reading for anyone with even a remote involvement with computers and communications - which today means almost everyone.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2014Definitely worth having and a fantastic product.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2018I first read this book more than 20 years ago. It's an eye opener. I'm a software engineer and I've frequently recommended it to my peers, but I think it should have a much wider audience including members of congress. We who design software need to realize that risks include more than the failure of software to work.
Consider Facebook. When it's user base was under 100,000,000 the risk of political misuse was negligible. With a user base of over 1,000,000,000 that risk is clearly significant. Who stops to consider the new risks caused by growth of the customer base? Order of magnitude increases in any metric are likely to bring new and previously unexplored risks.

Grega FajdigaReviewed in Germany on June 11, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably low price for an excellent book.
The order came a little late because of the Covid-19 situation but the book is in excellent condition for a shockingly low price. This classic should be on the bookshelf of anyone interested in security, computer-related or otherwise.
