Editorial Reviews
Review
"An important historical work that should be read by all." --Nichi Bei Weekly
"With a narrative style that is consistently crisp, clear, and cogent, this book brilliantly fills a significant void in the study of the Japanese American detention in World War II."--Arthur A. Hansen, editor of the Japanese American World War II Evacuation Oral History Project

Was an interesting read and a good companion to Nisei Daughter. Would have liked more photos.

Scholarly exposition from the outside administrative perspective as to the organization and workings of one of the assembly centers to which Japanese Americans were evacuated prior to more permanent camps during WWII. Availability of official governmental records comprises the basis of the report. As such, it is enlightening as to how official thinking evolved to remove all persons of Japanese ancestry from the west coast. It does not capture the human tragedies that resulted - the fear, sorrow, individual and family disorganization that were some of the consequences of that wholesale incarceration.

Love the illustration! Very true depiction of that terrible time.

The writing was stilted, the sentences were often awkward. I am not sure a gifted editor could have fixed this mess. But just a decent attempt at unraveling the odd and poorly written text would have helped. I'm not talking about an occasional problem with the writing - instead it's hard to read two paragraphs without running into sentences that would receive poor marks in a high school term paper. What a shame. It's such an important topic.
