The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream Hardcover – October 17, 2006
Purchase options and add-ons
“In our lowdown, dispiriting era, Obama’s talent for proposing humane, sensible solutions with uplifting, elegant prose does fill one with hope.”—Michael Kazin, The Washington Post
In July 2004, four years before his presidency, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. One phrase in particular anchored itself in listeners’ minds, a reminder that for all the discord and struggle to be found in our history as a nation, we have always been guided by a dogged optimism in the future, or what Obama called “the audacity of hope.”
The Audacity of Hope is Barack Obama’s call for a different brand of politics—a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He explores those forces—from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media—that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.
At the heart of this book is Barack Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racial and religious tensions within the body politic, and the transnational threats—from terrorism to pandemic—that gather beyond our shores. And he grapples with the role that faith plays in a democracy—where it is vital and where it must never intrude. Underlying his stories is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus.
Only by returning to the principles that gave birth to our Constitution, Obama says, can Americans repair a political process that is broken, and restore to working order a government that has fallen dangerously out of touch with millions of ordinary Americans. Those Americans are out there, he writes—“waiting for Republicans and Democrats to catch up with them.”

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2007I think we all know Barack Obama as the charming, middle-of-the-road Illinois Senator now poised to make a run at the White House in 2008.
While I still believe it's unlikely America is ready for a non-white male Christian President, Obama's book at least gives a vision of what qualities I think the first non-white male Christian President of the United States will probably have to possess: appealing values & integrity.
I knew about as much as the average American about Obama prior to reading "The Audacity of Hope." After completing the book, I can honestly say he is indeed a mild-mannered politician brimming with optimism who believes there's no reason why America's promise can't & shouldn't benefit all.
Obama tends to go the empathetic route (liberal views by some standards) when it comes to helping the poor, fighting poverty and improving the educational system in low-income areas across the country.
He also tends to lean slightly more conservative when it comes to his religious background and acknowledging how that shapes his worldview.
However, the real jackpot of this book and where I think Obama is starting to win fans over is promoting the notion that we all can find COMMON GROUND no matter what our background or personal political perspectives might be.
This isn't necessarily a new concept by any stretch of the imagination, but I think Obama succeeds where many politicians have failed because he still has that "I'll fight for what's best for the common man" approach that so many politicians on his level have lost.
"The Audacity of Hope" in Obama's concept is loosely based on overcoming differences of opinion, Congressional alliances and all of the idling bureaucracies that hinder any real progress to make positive changes Americans can see and touch.
It would take me another 1,000 or so words to break down the book chapter by chapter. Obama, like all politicians, has an opinion on everything.
The only asset I'd add that perhaps hasn't been expressed by other reviewers here is that Obama comes across as very non-threatening, approachable and genuine.
At central focus of "The Audacity of Hope" is Obama detailing how his childhood, racial background, education, religious faith and family values all contributed to shaping who his is today and how he sees the world.
All of these things helped form his opinions on race, politics, war, social welfare, Capitalism, Communism, freedom and matters that pertain to Church v. State.
Yet, his winning points are in understanding how his identity both enhances and in some ways limits his perspectives when it comes to trying to relate to others who come from the opposite end of the spectrum.
This is where putting into action the attempt to find common ground and making sure the good of all Americans truly being made top priority is soooo fundamental.
In other words, Obama knows he doesn't have all the answers and is the first Democrat to openly admit one must listen to the other side (Republicans) because one side doesn't have all the right answers.
As the title of my review states, if you "get this" about Obama's perspectives, "The Audacity of Hope" will either be one of your better or worst reads.
I, for one, understand the value in understanding a point of view counter to my own and the impending necessity in life you'll find in having to work together to tackle a big problem.
Highly recommended read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2008Great audiobook! I really enjoyed it. Great motivator and a wonderful speaker. Very inspirational. There's nothing negative in his writings. Only inspiration and hope. Hope for all people. I'm very selective when it comes to what I feed my brain and my children. There's no negative and/or hate messages in his writings. I don't know what else to say. Just read and judge for yourself. I'm not a tabloid or front page reader. You might say I'm from the show me state. I had to do the research to find out the truth. I respect, but I can't agree with the review I just read. That's why I got the books and did the research. Man is imperfect....it's God I worship. I'm first and far most a member of the Democratic Party. That's where my focus is. This is a very important time in our lives and no matter who gets to run in November on the Democratic ticket, I will support them. Out with the present damaged government and let's work together towards a new one that's cares about it's people. Be careful, if you're a Democrat, not to make statements that may damage the party due to the "favorite game". This is not a game. This is the real world. As I said, I enjoyed Mr. Obama's audiobooks. They were very well written and spoken and a great feeling and inspiration for all ages. Take away the politics, the faces, the spin and listen to the message without your prejudices (we all have them)and judge for yourself. I did. Thank for reading my review. I think both Hilliary and Obama could both make a difference, but I have to say Mr. Obama can inspire the people. According to the latest polls people feel he can be trusted to do a good job if chosen. No matter who's choosen it's our jobs as citizens of the USA to keep tabs, checks and balances to make sure our nation is healthy with a functional government that's for the people. It's "WE THE PEOPLE"...we are the only ones that can make a difference, reclaim our government and heal the nation. It's not up to Mr. Obama to fix us. He can't. We have to fix ourselves. He seems to have the ability to unite and open up mutual channels of communication that's needed to move forward. With the ability for all to cooperated and communicate for the greater good we can accomplish great things.
ps. Dreams of the father:and the audicity of hope are also great!

Like many youngsters, I had no opinion of politics other than thinking that it's a mess. Nothing seems to get done because of a vague "system", kept in place by vested interests. I thought of politics as a game, where the slickest and most appealing personalities win. At least on my part, I'd vote just by the contestant's personality, and how good a person he or she projected to be.
After reading this book, I realized that there is a method to this madness. Politics consists of policies, policies which aim to benefit sections of people. There is a way to think about what is required for the country. There is a way to even sometimes, transcend seemingly opposing ideologies. That deep comprehension, a 360-degree view of a problem, and empathy can help us formulate regulations that can actually benefit people.
This requires a brain that can grapple with complexities, not just scientific complexities but human complexities. This job requires a professor with a heart, not a movie star. A patriot who can also be empathetic, not a successful mogul. A person who can formulate third alternatives in the face of opposition, not just a forceful decision-maker with a one-track mind. Policies and their implementation records of potential candidates matter. A clear understanding of complex social issues matters. And for the top job (President/Prime Minister), an international mindset matters, because you need to represent the best interests of your nation on the world stage. Obama explains his views lucidly, giving deep insights into the running of a country, what unites and what divides America, problems of race, gender and income, etc. Fantastic read. Respect.
