At the age of thirty-three, Ray Audette was diagnosed with diabetes. This was devastating as he'd already been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for more than twelve years and walked with a cane. Tired of being sick all the time, and unhappy with what his doctors said couldn't be cured, he decided to school himself on these disorders. As a result of his research, he developed an interest in Paleolithic nutrition-a natural diet based on the science of what our Stone Age ancestors ate before the development of agrarian societies.

He then started on this diet, and although he expected positive results, he was astounded by the improvement he saw in just one week. His blood-sugar levels were normal, and within a month his arthritic pain was gone, his muscle tone had improved, and he'd lost twenty-five pounds.

His mission then became to share this information, so he developed NeanderThin, a simple plan for achieving a healthy weight, and most important, a healthy body.

Ray Audette is the official nutritionist for the Ted Nugent Show. When not hunting or gathering, he lectures, consults, and writes about Paleolithic nutrition. He lives in Dallas, Texas.

I have had this book in the past, followed it and lost weight, then moved, lost the book, lost my routine, and regained. Gearing up to change my lifestyle once and for all, bought this in Kindle format, but decided to repurchase the hard copy book as well. This method takes you back to much more simple eating, the kind of eating for which our bodies have evolved. The few hundreds of years since man became more agrarian have not been sufficient to evolve our very structures, consequently many of the degenerative and allergic type reaction we have to food are related to that failure to biologically adapt. But the way we eat is so endemic to our ways today, that it takes a well written book to help guide the way back to how we function best and most naturally from a biologic standpoint. It works, I have done it. I fully expect it will work again.

This book was my introduction to the Paleo diet back in 2000. I just happened to be watching a game show called "To Tell The Truth" and a man named Ray Audette was one of the guests. I was hooked!

Since then I have bounced back and forth from the Mediterranean diet to the Paleolithic diet more than a few times. From my experience, I can definitively say that the NeanderThin diet is the only diet that has banished my sinusitis, joint pain, and persistent acid reflux issues. In addition, it's the only way of eating that provides effortless weight loss for me. My energy and mood are vastly improved on this diet too.

I highly recommend this book.

First time paleo dieters, look no further

Easily the most easy to read book to read on the paleo diet. The book starts off with just enough background for the layperson to understand the background and reasons that the paleo diet works and then gets into how it works in practice. The recipes are a great mix of simple and complex that will satisfy any palette. The green chili stew, coconut ice cream, and paleo bbq sauce are superior to their non-paleo alternatives. I highly recommend this book for folks looking to get into the paleo diet for the first time, as well as those long time practitioners looking to try out some new recipes.

I'll give this 5 stars because it was so early. I would not recomend this to the average person looking for a book to tell them how to go Paleo. For that I would suggest Robb Wolf's book or one of Mark Sissons.

But for the person that is really into the Caveman/Paleo/Primal/Ancestral lifestyle and way of eating this is a good read. I recommend this in the same sense that I recommend Boyd Eaton's "The Paleolithic Prescription", Vilhjalmur Stefansson's "not by Bread Alone" or "The Fat of the Land" and Dr Walter Voegtlins "The Stone Age Diet". These books help keep me motivated and on the path.

Decent book, but there are more complete ones published since, still worth reading though

There is a ton of Primal / Paleo books around these days.

This books is a bit older, but still relevant in most of its data. I'd say that about 90% of it is still relevant.

If you already have several books on this topic, then don't bother.

But if you are new to the topic of Paleo / Primal eating and physical training then this book is as good as any other to start with.

The simplest and most sensible of Paleo diet books. Rather than drown you in studies, he lays out the evolutionary and anthropological basis for his diet. References are listed at the back of the book, and the reader is encouraged to explore them. The approach lets you see the forest clearly before examining the trees.
Neanderthin is a strict approach, but lays out a clear ground zero for books which followed. Sadly, its out-of-print status prevents revised editions to comment on the vast work done since the 1999 printing. Still, it is the best starting point for anyone interested in the reasons for a Paleo-style of eating.

A more natural way and effective way of eating and living

This book is one of several books published in recent years advocating a protein and fat diet. Where it differs from the others is the narrow range of foods permitted compared with say Dr Atkins method.
The author hunts for a significant amount of his food which is as free from additives as possible in this day and age.
Where Ray Audette differs from other similar authors is that he does not advocate dairy products such as cheeses and the like.
For me, hunting for my food is totally out of the question, but I do eat similar foods that are farm reared.
Whilst I fortunately do not have anything like the same medical history that this author had, I can say that I feel much better within myself and have lost one stone in weight. I know that I now have an enjoyable diet that will keep me fit and well for many years longer compared with eating a high complex carbohydrate, low fat diet as I did for the previous 20 years and felt ill for a long period of that time. This is a thoughtful and well written book.

Neanderthin- 2 million years old and going strong!

The new edition is expanded with more detail on the relationship of food and disease, what to eat, how to go about the diet, an easy to follow exercise program and more recipes.
Ray Audette's personal odyssey is inspiring. His history of nutrition is fascinating. His explanations for obesity, arthritis and other diseases are convincing.
If you diet hasn't given you the results you need, grab Neanderthin and go for it. It certainly worked for me.
