Review

"The new edition is the ultimate handbook for anyone participating in outdoor activities or eco-tourism far from medical care, and it was written by an ...authority in wilderness medicine." Best Health Books of 2009 - Wall Street Journal 2009

"By far the best book on the subject." - Field & Stream

"If a doctor isn't with you on your wilderness wanderings, this splendid book should be in your pack." -
New York Times

"Anyone who travels to out-of-the-way places will take comfort in this handy, updated guide." -
Publishers Weekly

"If you can't have an experienced emergency physician with you when you're traveling off the beaten path, take this book. And read it first!" -
Whole Earth

"This reference work contains critical information for lay people who encounter unexpected hazards ranging from bad weather and snake bites to sprained ankles and heat stroke. Of course, the book doesn’t guarantee that lay people will become certified paramedics; however, armed with 535 pages of detailed information, most readers will feel more confident making decisions that could mean the difference between life and death. Dr. Auerbach’s advice, captured in this reference book, teaches us how to safely enjoy "green" exercise." - Carole Carson author of From Fat to Fit: Turn Yourself into a Weapon of Mass Reduction and serves as the national coach for the AARP Fat to Fit Community Challenge, a free weight-loss program welcoming all ages.

"Auerbach delivers a substantial amount of material in a well-written and concise paperback that can serve as a medical manual emphasizing outdoor hazards, with therapeutic recommendations extended to a clinic setting… The book is divided into major medical problems, minor medical problems, disorders related to specific environments, miscellaneous information, and appendices. Medicine for the Outdoors will prove useful for a broad spectrum of readers needing a credible reference on medical care in remote environments or even in urban environments in the aftermath of a disaster. " - JAMA October 2009

There is nothing in this book that you don't need to know. You don't have to commit the book to memory but I would encourage you to know what's in it and how to find it quickly.

The first duty of Scout leaders or anyone in outdoor education is the safety and well being of young people at an age when they are poor judges of risk and have a propensity to overestimate their capacities. We need to know how to keep them safe and how to respond if they are injured or ill.

Medicine for the Outdoors is the work of Dr. Paul Auerbach - wilderness medicine pioneer and arguably the world's foremost expert on the subject. He explains the how and why of responding to nearly every possible illness or injury we are likely to encounter in a concise, step by step manner that is intended to be used on the spot - but don't wait for something to happen before you read the book.

Safety is not owning the right gear or having the right book. It is not having a well-appointed first aid kit. Safety is knowing how to prevent injury and illness and how to respond if it occurs.

Get the book, read through it, make notes and practice the skills before you need them. I have a Kindle copy that I can carry on a smartphone, iPod or similar device. I also have a copy of the book that lives in the first aid

This is, hands down, the best First Aid, Emergency Medical Reference book I have ever seen...hands down. I've been a mountain guide for forty years and wish I had this years ago. I carry it downloaded on my Kindle everywhere I go. It's way more than a first aid book. It should be in every home. I am familiar with the author who is considered the foremost authority on the subject. The book is nearly impossible to get, but available on a reader such as a Kindle. Better on a reader as you can take it everywhere in case an accident happens and you don't know what to do. A person falls and dislocates his thumb, or maybe his index finger. The immediate treatment is totally different. This book is worth ten times its price.

Author lists apple & pear seeds, cherry pits, peach & apricot pits as toxic, when this is untrue. I've been eating them for 4 years now, 6 apricot seeds per day, and am far healthier than I was 4 years ago. You can learn more about eating your seeds with your fruit from the Bible, and from [...] . Otherwise a very helpful resource in hard times, easy to read & understand. Highly recommend.

This book covers almost every conceivable medical situation you will likely encounter in the field. The only downside is that the book is too big and heavy to carry with you during many of the outdoor activities where you might need it. It is ideal for a survivalist homesteader or other remote but relatively stationary situation, or even as part of a vehicle kit. It includes medications and dosages used to treat various maladies, and would prove an invaluable reference for anyone in an emergency situation away from traditional medical services. It is also a useful tool in creating an emergency medical kit targetted at specific activitied and situations, giving detailed information on the items needed for each type of emergency. Training is key, and no book will ever replace professional emergency medical personnel, but this book uses layman's language to describe medical emergencies and their treatments and can assist you when the professionals are not available.

Dr. Auerbach has taken his bible of outdoor medicine, Wilderness Medicine, and has condensed it down into a terrific field guide in "Medicine for the Outdoors". Packed full of effective emergency treatment, this should be a standard on every outdoor bookshelf.

Organized into easily indexed chapters the book also has handy conversion tables, a "before you go" section, and chapters on water purification, casualty evacuation, medication and doses, and an extensive glossary.

When I received my copy I spent the next few days avidly reading it. Dr. Auerbach's writing style makes for a comfortable read, and I look forward to reading it again and again.

If you are anticipating being an expedition medic, or just want to have a safer camp...get this book.

I'm not a doctor, just an avid hiker that has taken the Wilderness Medicine Institute two day course and purchased at least three other hiking medicine books. As a hike organizer and leader I need rapid access to information that is professionally top notch, practical, useful, effective, and up-to-date in the outdoors. Dr. Auerbach never loses sight of the environment that you will be practicing in and delivers on each of the previous dimensions. I even purchased the Kindle version in addition to a print copy so I have an electronic copy on my Android with me at all times, the only Kindle book on my phone. I couldn't be more relieved that I found this book.

This is a great book that should be in every outdoor enthusiasts library. I've got several books on survival and emergency medical situations, but this one deals with things that aren't covered in any of the others. Really got me thinking about my needs and preparations for emergencies when camping and backpacking. It's also a good book to have around for household injuries and emergencies. After looking at this book, I added a couple more items to the house and camping first aid kits. After looking at several highly rated books on this subject, this is the one I choose. It's the best of the bunch. Great Book!
