In James Tiptree Jr.'s Warm Worlds in Otherwise, Robert Silverberg famously claimed in his introduction that Tiptree could not, as some had speculated, be a woman. He was soon proven wrong when Tiptree turned out to be a pseudonym for Alice Sheldon. Silverberg claimed that certain stories can only be written by men just as certain stories can only be written by women. I like to think that Tiptree confirmed that gender does not matter in the world of fiction.

Tiptree's stories are fast-paced, adventurous, and bold - qualities that some may deem masculine, certainly. But they are also filled with reflection on the psychological states of people, as well as the relationships among us, particularly between men and women.

In "The Women Men Don't See," a plane crashes with the narrator - an American government agent named Don - and Ruth Parsons and her daughter aboard. Don, who thinks he knows how the women will behave based on his stereotypes of women, is agitated when Ruth and her daughter do not seem panicked or helpless. Ruth accompanies Don to find water, and she finds an alien device which she then uses to call the aliens to them. In the end Ruth and her daughter use the aliens to escape our male-dominated world.

In my favorite piece of the collection, the novella "The Girl Who Was Plugged In," a homely young woman is given a new body that she controls from a case in which her original body is kept alive; the new body is used by corporations for the sole sake of advertising, as ads are technically illegal in this future society. The young woman meets a man, and the man tries to save her, but his misunderstanding of the situation leads to disastrous consequences. In this story too, one of the main conflicts lies in the disconnect between a man and a woman.

Both stories can also be seen as a comment of the status of women in our society. The narrator of "The Women Men Don't See" views his female companions as irrational, incapable of making the right choices. Women are valued exclusively by their beauty in "The Girl Who Was Plugged In."

Sexuality also plays a large role in most of the short stories of this collection. "The Milk of Paradise" utilizes the main character's sexual proclivity toward the alien species he was raised by to explore his nostalgia for their way of life. In a resonant conclusion, he is taken back to the planet, where he discovers the paradise of his youth is not as perfect as he remembers. My favorite story that deals, rather explicitly, with sexuality is "Love is the Plan the Plan is Death," in which spider-like creatures attempt to thwart their animalistic fate. I was amazed how well Tiptree pulls off a story that explores the sexual lives of spiders.

As I stated earlier, the majority of Tiptree stories in this collection move at lightning speed, especially the first "All the Kinds of Yes," which moves so fast I found myself with a strange sense of vertigo. This story is one of the few in which I found myself flailing to understand. For one, Tiptree has a habit of using her original diction, often jargon specific to the narrators' lifestyles, without explaining any of it. Usually I'm able to read through without pause, gathering the meanings of these words from their context, but every now and then I would have to read the same paragraph over and over, and rarely did rereading make it any clearer. I appreciate the skill with which Tiptree usually accomplishes this skill, but be forewarned that there may be places in the prose where some degree of confusion is inevitable.

"Through a Lass Darkly" is another instance where I found myself alienated by the diction. Not throughout the entire story - I was able to figure most of it, that birdypoo is the women's restroom for example - but the exact details of the time-traveling lass' living arrangements with the queen group escape me. And not all of these meanings are necessary in order to understand the story. Even with my lack of understanding, "Through a Lass Darkly" still stands out as one of the most fun stories in the collection.

All in all, there wasn't a single story in Warm Worlds & Otherwise I didn't like, and the majority of them - seven of the twelve - are stories I have now added to my list of favorite shorts of all time. As an introduction to the work of James Tiptree Jr., this book makes a great impression.

This is the Tiptree collection which contains the infamous introduction by Robert Silverberg in which he claims that Tiptree was not just a man, but indubitably a man, based on the text herein. Of course, Tiptree wasn't a man, which Silverberg discovered in a personal note from Alice Sheldon to himself, recounted in an afterword to his introduction in this later edition of the collection. Silverberg, it should be noted, is extremely gracious in noting his mistake, saying that Sheldon fooled him--and most everyone--beautifully and "called into question the entire notion of what is 'masculine' and 'feminine' in fiction." While the point is well taken, as Silverberg thanks Sheldon for forcing him to examine his preconceptions once again, I note that Tiptree had good practice at imitating a man long before she began to publish as one, as many women of her generation had to. I would like to think that this is one of the things that has changed; I fear that it isn't.
Although Tiptree wrote masterfully about the differences and problems of the sexes (here in probably her best-known story, "The Women Men Don't See"), to me she is at her best when commenting on the general human race (here in stories like "The Last Flight of Dr. Ain" and "On the Last Afternoon"). Not only had Tiptree discovered and was able to relate the differences between the sexes, but she had also found the similarities--that is, what made us "human." And that, to me, is the purpose of all fiction.

best SF short stories I ever read - clever & moving

I read this in college in the 70's. I passed the tattered copy around to my friends until it literally fell apart. On a magical backpack trip above Yosemite, a friend & I read it outloud to each other by campfire light. I've been looking for it (& that feeling) for years!

Still shocking after all these years

I recently read the new biography of Alice Sheldon, whose nom de plume was James Tiptree, Jr., and so I went back and re-read this book. Harlan Ellison once said something about "the healing art of razor blade fiction" and that's what Warm Worlds & Otherwise is -- razor blade fiction. No, my friends, it's just a fact that The Universe is not a friendly place and the long run plans of DNA may not include "mankind." James Tiptree, Jr., knew this, well, and got it across, written in blood. Don't miss this book.
