Esteemed professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Pulitzer Prize-winning author John E. Mack M.D. (October 4, 1929 - Sep 27, 2004) spent his career examining how a sense of connection develops across cultures and between individuals, and how these connections alter people's worldviews.
His best known book on this theme, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1977, is A Prince of Our Disorder, a biography of British officer T. E. Lawrence (who became known as ''Lawrence of Arabia''). He also interviewed political leaders and citizens of the Soviet Union and Israel/Palestine in the study of ethno-national conflict and the Cold War.
His interest in different worldviews was not limited to the terrestrial; for more than ten years he studied people who reported a connection existed between themselves and ''aliens''. Two books detailed how these ''alien encounters'' had affected the way people regarded the world - including heightening their sense of spirituality and their environmental concern. These were widely reported in the media as a simple endorsement of the reality of alien encounters, and he endured an inquiry by Harvard to determine whether this research met the standards of a Harvard professor. (The medical school ultimately ''reaffirmed Dr. Mack's academic freedom to study what he wishes and to state his opinions without impediment.'')
Mack's interest in the transformational aspects of extraordinary experiences corresponded to his own belief that the Western world requires a shift away from a primarily materialist worldview. This worldview, he suggested in his many writings, was the root cause of the Cold War, regional conflict, and the global ecological crisis. He advocated a shift towards a transpersonal worldview that embraced some elements of Eastern spiritual and philosophical traditions which emphasized a sense of ''connection''; Mack believed such a shift could alter the path of the world towards a more sustainable future.
Mack passed away at the age of 74 in London, England.

Great book on Alien abduction. I highly recommend it.

If you enjoy reading a book written at a PhD level this is it. The book written by Dr. Mack goes into deal about the alien abduction phenomenon very well. As far as I am concern, he wrote the book on the subject. I learned a great deal from this author. I also, learned an answer to a question I have had for a long time. Do the aliens mind that their abductees are telling people about their abductions? No, there has been "no retaliations" from people talking about their abduction stories.

Dr. Mack use hypnosis to help is patients remember their abduction experiences. I found them all to be interesting. I feel much more enlightened on the subject than I ever was. I highly recommend people to read this book if they need to know information about the alien abduction phenomenon.

Dr. Mack is/ was a Harvard psychiatrist that is also trained in the art of regressions (hypnosis). This was the added sign-on for me to want to read the book.

It is written at a PhD level, oh well. Look up the terms if need be. Some of the words he uses I had to look up. But I do not regret reading this book. I found it a great source of information and the abductees were regular as you and me. Most of them are educated but still, the people and what the go through do not happen to special people. These abductions happen to regular people and advanced educated people.

With that said, I found this book to be much worth my time and energy reading. I found it highly informal on the subject. I do definitely recommend it.

Abduction by Dr. Mack explores the more spiritual aspect of the abduction phenomena by highlighting several cases of abductees who have come to terms with their abductions and even the abductors. Several of these abductees even believe they have a dual alien/human life, and one even believes he's 100% alien and he volunteered to come to earth as a human during reincarnation. I don't discount these views because the abduction scenario is so odd as a whole, who can say what is real. I tend to believe the aliens are conducting a misinformation campaign and deliberately confusing us so they can continue their agenda, whatever it may be. I disagree with Dr. Mack that they are possibly here to save mankind. They're going through an awful lot of trouble to soley benefit the human race while they themselves have little to gain. I lean more towards Dr. Jacobs theory and recommend any of you to read that as well, to understand both sides of the coin so to speak. The book is written well and professional and Dr. Mack is a well educated, well respected psychiatrist so I don't take his theory with a grain of salt, but he does at times seem reluctant to accept the possibility that we are in our end times. Even when his patients describe apocalyptic images shown to them by the aliens, Dr. Mack seems to try to label it a hypothetical, or perhaps taking place in a different dimension or parallel universe. I for one hope he is right, but I'm not so convinced. I do however appreciate the opposite end of the spectrum and reading of enlightening situations and not the doom and gloom versions most abduction books take on. I would highly recommend this book to any body interested in the unknown. It was a great and informative read.

This is extremely interesting! Abductees share their stories and bring into question much of what we have been told about the nature of our world and ourselves. Really letting the possiblities in that things are not what they seem is profound. So many people who do not know each other having common (and at the same time very unique) experiences is undeniably compelling. The spiritual component was very unexpected. I have not heard so many people speak about their spiritual awareness being awakened by abduction experiences. This spiritual aspect is the most interesting part of these experiences. Read it and you will see what I mean.
I love that we get simply the person's story-what they shared-particularly under hypnosis. Then the author comes in with his discussion about what they said and how it related to what others have said. In this way, we get to make what we will of what is shared initially and then see the author's take on what was said. This book has affirmed somethings for me and brought up many questions. Who among us are willing to open to the truth even when it completely shatters our view of the world? What if that shattered view opens you to something beautiful beyond anything you can imagine? Unknown does not equal danger. Let your curiosity and search for truth guide you through your fear to what is really there. Thank you Dr. John Mack for being courageous enough to write this book. Thank you to the abductees for sharing your stories.

The author makes no claims as to the objective reality of his subjects' experiences. That said, he does come across as having a certain credulousness concerning what are extraordinary claims. Dr. Mack was a world renowned professor of psychiatry when he stumbled into the alien abduction phenomenon and he begins and ends the book with skepticism concerning the objective reality of their experiences, but willing to set aside his disbelief to get at the psychiatric aspects he is most interested in. That said, no proof is offered beyond his judgement that regardless of objective reality, these experiences are "real" to his patients.

Great book. So many times you will be ready to call BS but the clinical material is so dense and rich it leaves you scratching your head. It’s also a story of Mack himself who jumps into a clinical phenomena with both feet and grapples with both the ethics and subjectivity of presenting the material. Whether it’s research or treatment it’s never clear, whatever is clear is that it’s a phenomena that shook all involved to the bone. Whatever your personal take on the abduction phenomena if you are interested in ufos the clinical material presented here is important. It’s also a great cultural artefact in its own right and utterly compelling.
