Hillary's Choice Paperback – August 15, 2000

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 88 ratings

Why does she stay with him? Where does she go from here? The author who revealed a generation's Passages now answers all the questions about the most talked-about First Lady in American history. In Hillary's Choice, Hillary Clinton is rendered fully human for the first time. Here is the life of a woman that is also the story of a marriage--and the drama of a presidency.

From her childhood with a demanding father and frustrated mother to her life as a professional wife determined to elect her husband president . . . from the sexual betrayals that nearly broke her to the national scandal that remade her . . . this is the epic journey of a modern American woman, a saga that begins in passivity, moves through self-punishment, and ends in power.

Who was the one "other woman" who posed a serious threat to their marriage? What was the real reason for the health care failure? How did Hillary escape the snare of Kenneth Starr? How has she managed, through it all, to be a good mother? No matter what her future, the mysteries about Hillary Clinton's past have been fully resolved by Hillary's Choice, a stunning achievement from a master chronicler of our times.

I want to first state that I am not an admirer of the Clintons. I was looking to find out more about what kept them together, even now after Hillary's loss to Trump they are still interesting and entertaining in a perverse way. I thought the author did a good job of answering my questions while mostly steering an extremely difficult path of neutrality. After all that's happened, who can be neutral about the Clintons. I learned many details about both of them. I'm glad I read the book. Hillary's behavior after her 2017 election loss has become more comprehensible after reading this.

I'm so glad read this book at this time. Although I have known that Hillary is the most qualified candidate in this election of 2016, I have held reservations about her as a person. This book provides a very honest and gut wrenching view of the trials and tribulations of Hillary, not just as the wife of Bill Clinton, but as the daughter of Hugh Rodham. I strongly recommend this book!

Confirmed who I thought she was.

I thought it was time for me to know more about the next president of the United States, so I bought and read this book. It has engrossed me for two and a half days. I did nothing but the basics as I read through the Clintons' often tortured history. I admire their accomplishment in raising an intelligent and accomplished daughter amid the chaos. I feel that the author, Gail Sheehy, both enlightened me and helped confirm some of my earlier opinions. The book, due to its subjects, is not an easy one to read.

There are three places where the text has been mixed up or misplaced, and it should be fixed.

I like Gail Sheehy as a writer and have read many of her other books, which I have found to be interesting and insightful. Consequently, when I realized I had not read this one that I was interested in getting a better of events surrounding Hillary and her life from childhood onward. I felt like Sheehy gave the reader the inside motivations to how Hillary made choices and decisions throughout her life. I was surprised by all the wonderful positive things she has done not that never got much attention in media.

I thought Hillary's Choice, a book about one of my favorite people by one of my favorite people, would be the ideal book for me. I was wrong. The book has left me with a sense of sadness over having to say good-bye to Ms. Sheehy, her "favorite woman" status, and her future literary contributions. Sheehy's interpretations, presentations, and ludicrous psychoanalysis in Hillary's Choice have seriously damaged her credibility; anything she has to say in the future will be suspect. But, of course, what you want to know is whether you will like this book. That depends. Do you enjoy the psychoanalytic (Freudian) school of psychology? To enjoy the book you will need to be either a die-hard Freudian or to never have studied psychology at all. (You also have to be willing to accept, on Sheehy's friend's say-so, that the leader of the free world suffers from one of the rarest and most serious mental disorders described in the DSM-IV). You will need to be willing to believe that Hillary's autocratic, curmudgeonly father explains who Hillary is, despite the fact that thousands of women have grown up under the rule of autocratic, curmudgeonly fathers and have not developed the drive, confidence, ambition, and vision of Hillary Clinton. You need to be prepared for the negative aspects of Hillary's persona to be presented in their full negativity, and the positive aspects to be presented with a slight smirk. Whether you like Hillary's Choice depends in large part on whether you like Hillary. If you do, you probably won't.

I've been a Hillary fan for years so my liking this book is a bit predictable .It brought into focus for me why she should run for president she is the only woman I know of who could do the job. If elected would a Bill stand by her as First Gentleman!!
