I love this series, and this is a great collection of the books. More books are out now, so you are probably better off buying the 5 volume set. I just wish George R. R. Martin would hurry up and finish The Winds of Winter. If you are a fan of the Game of Thrones TV show, you should definitely check the books out. The characters are a lot more developed and seeing inside of their heads gives you much more appreciation for certain characters that the show kind of glosses over.

Fans of George R.R. Martin's smash hit Game of Thrones shouldn't hesitate in ordering these books, to accompany (but not replace) their viewing of the popular television series.

But please recognize this important point -- the box set on this page (either the hardcover or paperback versions) was put together before the fifth volume in the series was available in paperback, and so it does not represent the best value if you want the full collection of books.

That is available here --> George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones 5-Book Boxed Set, which includes all five books A Game of Thrones,A Clash of Kings,A Storm of Swords,A Feast for Crows (the same four books included in the box set on this page), plus the most recently released fifth volume A Dance with Dragons.

That would probably be the best you can do for now. There is a sixth book planned for release in the near future, though, so be prepared to want that one as well, just as soon as it is available.

Do you need any more justification? How about this - the expense of this five book set can easily be rationalized by considering that it provides one of the best 'bangs for the buck' currently available on Amazon for popular fantasy literature.

Think of it this way:

- Game of Thrones 5-book box set (refer to the link above) -- 4272 pages of high adventure for only 1.2 cents per page!

- War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy -- 1350 pages of Russian historical fiction, slightly less expensive at 0.9 cents per page, but three thousand pages shorter and far less racy and titillating!

- The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon -- approximately 4000 pages of real Roman history, originally published beginning in 1776 and with the final volume published in 1789, comparable in length to Game of Thrones but, lets face it, nowhere near as interesting to read (sorry, Rome), and somewhat expensive at 2.2 cents per page (nice slip-cased hardcover books will look good on your bookshelves and impress your friends and neighbors, though)

- World Book Encyclopedia -- over 14,000 pages and still being printed in actual paper volumes annually (!!) for those holdouts who stubbornly and inexplicably refuse to consider wikipedia to be the source of all information available to mankind. The 2014 edition does not seem to be available on Amazon at the present time, but can be purchased at the companies own website for a stratospheric 7 cents per page!

The battle lines have been drawn, and the choice is clear! Game of Thrones is the obvious winner (and again, don't forget to order the 5-volume set, not this outdated one here).

Famous now due to the very graphic TV series, the novels are not as graphic, but are still not for kids. They are very well written however, and will grip your attention. This is especially so since no one is ever safe, which will keep you on the edge of your seat; since you never know if your favorite character is about to get offed. Martin spins a believable fantasy world that does not feel like a derivative of Tolkien unlike so many others. His grasp of human nature and ability to convey it on paper is what makes him such a great writer though; and while it is not a flattering portrait of said human nature, but unfortunately is a rather realistic one.

For anyone not familiar with the series, it tells the story of a kingdom that quickly falls into a succession dispute upon the death of the King. Allegedly inspired by the real life Wars of the Roses in medieval England, much of the culture and conventions as depicted in the book feel much like a medieval European world. It starts as almost low fantasy, with very little in the way of magic or the supernatural, but that changes as the series progresses. At first it can be a bit daunting learning all the different families and characters, but you will soon feel like you almost know them, so convincingly are they portrayed. Without spoiling the books, I think I can safely say that inevitably some of your favorite characters will not make it out alive, but that does not diminish, but rather enhances theses books, as they are unusually gripping.

This is one of the best book series i've ever read, best for teens and young adults, but anyone who enjoys a well written fiction will probably find something they like in these books ... Each chapter is another person's perspective and each book changes the characters a bit ... I won't reveal any story for those that don't know it already, but the attention to detail the writer put into these books is great and for a story of this scale, alternating the viewpoint by changing who's perspective you're reading each chapter is probably one of the best ways to tell it

I had trouble putting it down and every chance I got I picked it up again ... The TV show does not do these books justice, and it's a great show

The books are fine (I listened to them, didn't read this set), but when my son started reading this boxed set he found that in Book 3 there were a lot of pages missing. 50+ were missing in the 500s and then pages skipped back and forth in bunches for a while which didn't really matter once you knew you had a 50-page gap. The pages hadn't been taken out, it was just printed that way. So if you get this set just make sure to flip through to check pages first. Otherwise, it seems fine, but I gave it one star because having one book in a set incomplete kinda makes the set pointless. I got this far too long ago to return it, but I wanted to flag this for others. Just do a quick check.
