From the actor, director, and writer Ethan Hawke: a piercing novel of love, marriage, and renewal.

Jimmy is AWOL from the army, but—with characteristic fierceness and terror—he’s about to embark on the biggest commitment of his life. Christy is pregnant with Jimmy’s child, and she’s determined to head home, with or without Jimmy, to face up to her past and prepare for the future. Somehow, barreling across America from Albany to New Orleans to Ohio and Texas in a souped-up Chevy Nova, Christy and Jimmy are transformed from passionate but conflicted lovers into a young family on a magnificent journey.

Ash Wednesday is a novel of blazing emotion and remarkable grace, a tale that captures the intensity—the excitement, fear, and joy—of being on the threshold of the mysterious country of marriage and parenthood. Powerful, assured, large of heart, and punctuated by moments of tremendous humor, it represents, for Hawke the novelist, a major leap forward.

“Hawke’s witty narrative . . . presents us with a pair of lively and surprisingly earnest pilgrims.” —The New York Times Book Review

“Succeeds because of a kind of rolling exuberance of style that carries one along a narrative freeway with no exits. Once you’re on, you’re on.” —Larry McMurtry

“[Hawke] displays a novelist’s innate gifts. He has a sharp eye, a fluid storytelling voice and the imagination to create complicated individuals.” —
The New York Times

“Ethan Hawke is a gifted novelist. This, his second novel, follows the intense
romance and marriage of two smart, feeling, articulate young lovers.” –
The Boston Globe

“Hawke not only does the basics well, with deft physical descriptions and sharp dialogue, but has an eye for weird, surrealistic situations with a kernel of poetic seriousness. . . . A marvelous novel.” –
London Daily Telegraph

“Employing his ear for dialogue as a rudder and his insight into character as a turbo, Ethan Hawke skillfully navigates the roiling waters of the twentysomething heart.” –Tom Robbins

“An ambitious road novel.” –
Newsday

“Hawke, at times, achieves pure poetry.” –
Time Out New York

“Unfolds pretty much the way a book should, tracing a herky-jerk romance from Albany, New York, to New Orleans and Texas in a bizarrely mature narrative–straight, unapologetic, even funny.” –
Esquire

“A fast-paced story laced with thoughtful meditations on such thorny issues as spirituality, self-acceptance, and what makes love last.” –
Austin American Statesman

“[Hawke’s] got a focused, observant eye for realism and an attuned ear for language. . . . [He] is growing as an author, transforming himself into a novelist of interest.” –

These two lovers are total messes, both together and as individuals. They are insecure, impulsive, bitter, whiney, and terrified of their own skin. This is what made them so fascinating and terrifically real.
At times I hated them and just wanted them to grow the hell up. Other times I was moved by their fragile honesty and willingness to live despite all of their shortcomings.
This is the 2nd book by Ethan Hawke that I have read, and he's 2 for 2 in my eyes. So many great lines to be found here. Thoughtful stuff. Profound ones. Clever ones.
This boom made me feel better about how I'm handling life and reminded me I can be found out as a complete and utter fraud at any moment.

I was one of the few people that enjoyed Ethan Hawke's 1996 debut novel THE HOTTEST STATE, which provoked snickers and "worst of" inclusion at the time of its' publication. I'm not sure why I waited eleven years to read his 2002 follow-up, ASH WEDNESDAY, but there you are. ASH WEDNESDAY is a vibrant yet claustrophobic novel about two lovers, James Heartsock and Christy Ann Walker, two Albany, NY twentysomethings who alternately tell their story in first-person narratives. The story takes place over several cold days in February 1999, culminating in the novel's title. James and Christy are two lost, damaged souls who hold the keys to the other's psyche without the maturity to see all the angles. Both have relatively disconcerting childhoods that seem to influence and shade their adult decisions. Hawke, who, as one of the stars of REALITY BITES, has been pegged one of the templates of Generation X, adds James and Christy as two such members of that tribe - uncertain childhood, independent streak, unable to understand commitment. Likewise, religion is another dividing point, and James and Christy are not immune to disagreements, with Christy a non-believer and James, a non-practicing Catholic, not understanding how anyone could not been soothed by the Book of Common Prayer. Hawke's dialogue is crisp and concise and is an honest exemplification of the characters he's created. ASH WEDNESDAY takes advantage of several iconic locales, including a pivotal scene in the now-defunct Times Square Howard Johnson's that sums up the relationship between the couple; I don't want to spoil it, but like the rest of Hawke's sophomore novel, it walks the fine line between the mundane and the magical - and that's a good thing.

Ethan Hawke - yes, that Ethan Hawke - has proved himself to me again. A great writer of character development novels, Ash Wednesday is written from the view point of a confused couple in love. Great book, but not as good as The Hottest State.

Halfway through page one I realized that the writing was spot on, the voice distinct, the character disturbing and that was all I needed. I was now on this crazy journey with Jimmy and Christy, and their cat Grace. I forgot about Ethan, I forgot about teenage drooling, and I was submerged in the fantastic, sometimes less than pretty, life of these two main characters. I felt like a voyeur sitting in the backseat of Jimmy's Chevy Nova and the greatest part was Jimmy and Christy had no idea I was there with them. That is a true testament to how real the writing is.

Go get this book, you won't regret it, and when your done devouring it go get yourself a copy of The Hottest State. I've already got my copy coming from Amazon, can't wait!!!!

Love his writing and enjoyed this one even more than his first book. He understands human relationships. An easy read that was quite enjoyable on my vacation. I highly recommend it and wish he'd write something else. I also loved his talkie Before Sunrise and related movies.....if you liked those, you'd probably like these.

This was a fine effort. Consider: Every negative review mentions 'the actor' Hawke. Makes one wonder what they're hangup is on that point. Same thing with the great westerns by Gene Hackman, all negativity comes in the form of rants ...as if a person can only posess a single talent. Look at the ratings graph: When they are heavily weighted on the extremes, you can bet on passive/aggressive ad hominem snark. I thought it was well-written with obvious influence of a great editor.

I was blown away by this book. I would rate it as one of the best books I've ever read. I think is captures the emotional cycles of marriage and parenthood as The Catcher in the Rye captured teen angst.

Strange that some people did not like it. Not sure I understand their points. I think it was a true to life, original, and well written story. But then again, hundreds of people said gave Catcher in The Rye a bad review. Again...Wow!

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that Jesse might have written
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 17, 2014
This is a fantastic, thoughtful, and insightful read about some not so likeable characters. That is not to say that it is impossible to like Jimmy, Chrissy, or their love story of a road trip as they cross America – just that you can see all to well how easy it would be for either of them to find reasons to dislike the other. In that I guess its all too much life. Which is why, although I wouldn’t want to be Jimmy, its also a really good read. This is Ethan Hawke’s second novel. More commonly known as an actor who found fame in Dead Poets Society and his role in Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and it’s two sequels, which he also co-wrote – it is this last fact which is why I came to read Ash Wednesday.

In the Before Sunrise films, Hawke plays Jesse, a writer, and I felt greatly that this book could easily have been one of Jesse’s books with the way that he observes quite candidly the every day life of ordinary people. I’ll definitely be seeking out his first novel to read and any more that he comes out with.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 9, 2021
This is Mr Hawke's second book and is worth reading. Jimmy and Chrissy are not perfect, far from it. Yet their flaws are so human, their relationship is what life actually is, ups and downs, uncertainty and love above all. What I like about this book, as well as his first one is the little stories that come up every now and then. An incident of the past, a painful memory, little details that make you a part of the book as you tend to remember your own similar stories, small fragments of your past that come to surface and fill you with nostalgia. Well done!
