Book overview

It was many years ago that humans came and settled the world of Newholme-cruelly bending the planet to their will; setting down roots and raising up cities and farms and a grand temple to their goddess. But now the ground itself is shaking with ever-increasing violence. And the Great Questioner, official arbiter of the Council of Worlds, has come to this isolated orb to investigate rumors of a terrible secret that lies buried deep within Newholme's past--a past that is not dead, not completely. And it will fall to Mouche, a beautiful youth of uncommon cleverness and spirit, to save his imperiled home by dicovering and embracing that which makes him unique among humans. For every living thing on newholme is doomed, unless Mouche can appease something dark and terrible that is coiled within...and surrender to the mysterious ecstatic revelry taht results when the six moons join.

Review

"Delightful...at once witty, moving, and exactly right...a marvelously complex book, filled with humanity seen, and felt, at its best and its worst, and set alongside some fascinating alienness as well. Tepper knows how to stir the wit and wisdom of parable into a genuine page turner of a narrative, for male and female readers alike. -- Locus

A well written book with an engaging plot and some fine twists towards the end. Very evenly written, but not for the impatient. The author leaves multiple trails of breadcrumbs, all of which you must follow for the plot to fully blossom. After my first reading, I immediately turned back to page one and started over, to savor consistency and complexity that I could only taste briefly on the first reading.
Tepper provides a lot of information about the history of gender interactions and why we think the way we do, which I found quite believable and interesting. (but, being of an age where Women's Studies classes were not commonly available in college, I don't know whether this is WS101 or BS101) She occasionally slips into pedantry, as in her other books, but in this novel she does it by introducing too many superfluous characters, which, while moderately interesting on their own, ultimately exist only to pass on the information, rather than advance the story.
Despite this drawback, which is actually pretty minor since the characters themselves and their cultures can be pretty intriguing, I found this book engaging enough for me to go hunting for a hardback copy for my personal library. Approach it with some patience and you will find it rewarding.

This is Tepper being playful, in general. Not to say that there aren't some very dark moments and implications in the novel -- TW for body horror and sexual violence. But particularly in sections detailing the training for Hunks, young men trained to delightful companions to women who have met their contractual marital obligations, when she elucidates what might really make women happier, and why, in terms that might make sense to adolescent boys, I found her both amusing and on-point.
There's a broad cast of engaging protagonists -- The Questioner, a cyborg tasked with enforcing ethic edicts on planetary populations; two dancers, chosen to assist the Questioner in this assignment, one a cloned ballerina, the other a female impersonator from Kabuki tradition; a girl who ran away to sea and a life of disguise rather than face her expected gender role; and Mouche, a hunk in training with a special relationship to the native life of the planet -- which is much more complex than anyone thinks. There are evildoers greater and lesser, and half the fun is trying to figure out what each group thinks is going on... And then seeing how they are mistaken.

Wonderful read. This book is a must for understanding unhealthy behaviors between the sex's. Women should read this book to learn that some of the causes for attraction are hormone's overruling rational thought. Tepper is a master writer with the ability to slyly educate while telling entertaining tales. Brooding, violent males will not change because of the love and sacrifice of a good woman, they will simply take advantage and abuse her (with her permission).

While it started with a somewhat played theme it took a different turn and kept me interested through the whole book. The ending was a little bit anti-climatic but was still satisfactory. I would recommend it to my friends.

I do love Sherri Tepper books, and this one as usual meets my needs. As I start the first page I sink into the chair and have a warm glow with the feel good factor I know I am going to get with her books. This book describes a way of monitoring the behaviour of humans to ensure they meet a good moral criteria on the different planets they inhabit. We often judge others on the right or wrong way of doing things and usually justifies that ours is the right way, and this describes that it is not all that easy, and how do you choose a judge anyway? This book also differs I believe because it focuses more on various characters that need to work together to, well yes save the world (but hey never seems to get old hat that one). Yet I didn't loose the plot with the various characters, did I miss being best friends with one? No I think I saw different parts of myself in all of them.

This is an interesting imaginative story that starts well. As is usual for Tepper, she introduces a new social structure and the story in main part revolves around that. She gives an indication of events around the arrival of an alien long before the setting of the story. Around halfway the story develops into a more detail exposition of the events of that arrival and generated by it as characters move from one location to another. However, since these have already been flagged so that you can work out what happened this part becomes tedious. There are a few inconsistencies. The resolution of the problem with the alien does not gel well with the description of how it was treated previously or the current nature of the alien's reproductive organ set to detonate an explosion with any movement. Overall a good read.
