Bold, Comprehensive and Worth Reading

This book takes a bold step forward in the study of hairy hominids (or hominoids if one prefers) in that the two authors, Coleman and Huyghe, propose different classes of these mystery primates, from True Giants (9 feet and taller) to Neo-Giants to Proto-Pygmies to Unknown Pongids to even the controversial Water Apes. The reader travels from North America to Asia to Europe to even Oceania exploring these different creatures and the implications thereof. While the reader may not agree with every type of classification it is still a worthwhile read and a welcome addition to every Cryptozoological bookshelf.

I had no idea there were so many stories of encounters with mysterious Ape creatures. The illustrations are very good with great detail. The quality of the printing and paper are excellent. Defenitely a fun book to read and look at.

Not bad listing of mysterious, scientifically unproven primates. Each cryptoid has its own page, with some backstory of original sightings. I would have preferred a more in depth chapter on the better known creatures. Written around 1999, so the subject has now more info on these individual beasts. OK for mysterious creature enthusiasts.

Although attempting to be a pack-along "Field Guide" for any encounter with an unknown creature, you suddenly realize that most of the contents of this "Field Guide" is reaching for information that just is not available. If though, you are on a camping trip and wish to wow your younger audience, this could be your guide. It is even illustrated with black and white line drawings with what is described in the descriptions. To be blunt, more a field guide for someone in the past few centuries than any actual case evidence. I had been looking for more theory and evidence than just meer far reaching speculations. I hope to find another book on this subject that will deal with hard factual evidence to scrutinize, rather than just more old conjecture.

A good read!

Overall I enjoyed this book. The material was presented seriously but with small touches of humor that lightened what could have been an otherwise dry read. After a lifelong interest, I have begun to research the subject seriously to prepare for my first "hunt". This is the first of several books I have ordered to add to my library, and I would recommend it to anyone who is as interested in the subject as I am.
That being said I did have a few problems......
First is the books length. I read it cover to cover in one evening, and I was hoping for something a little more in depth. The illustrations were nice but I don't think that they really added that much, and I would have liked a little more actual information.
Second is the aquatic or "merbeing" treatment in the book. I understand that the authors included these reports in an attempt to cover the subject a thoroughly as possible, but mermaids....I thought that was a bit silly. I realize that most people would consider the subject of Bigfoot itself to be pushing the limits of believability and that some suspension of disbelief is necessary to even consider the possibility seriously. I just felt that by including aquatic primates in the subject matter only damaged the credibility of an already incredible topic.
All that aside I enjoyed the book, and I feel that it would make a fine addition to any collection of the strange and unusual.

fun, but less than dramatic scholarship

Decades ago, Bernard Heuvelmans, armed only with eyewitness accounts, boldly postulated a taxonomy of sea serpents. Coleman mimics this approach here but works with a flimsier data set and weaker credentials and thereby achieves rather limited success. I enjoyed Coleman's book as an anecdotal, even tongue-in-cheek, history of mystery primates. Yet, the value of his novel classification system was mitigated by the fact that the book plainly mixes sane reporting with absolute poppycock in very uneven fashion. One cannot ignore reams of forensic evidence of sasquatch, but I draw the line at 13-foot cannibals wielding clubs at Australian gulches and at isolated, third-hand reports of lanky gray 20-footers stalking the Scottish highlands--especially when the pictures look like something taken directly from a lesser Ray Harryhausen spectacle, e.g., "Equinox" or "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger." On a final disappointing note, although the book is presented under the guise of scholarship, it clearly does not match the level of analysis characteristic of, say, Krantz or Shackley that one would expect from an author who declares in his own hand (thank you very much) that he is a "professor at two New England colleges."

Veteran anomalist Loren Coleman and science writer Patrick Huyghe have written an intelligent, absorbing overview, taking material that is certainly controversial -- and, to some, downright outlandish -- and making surprising sense of it. They know their anthropology and zoology, and they apply the tools of these disciplines to the analysis of legendary creatures whose existence most anthropologists and zoologists dispute. They lay out a persuasive argument that we share our planet with some awfully interesting animals, some of which may be even closer evolutionary cousins of ours than gorillas and chimpanzees are. In a few cases, such as chupacabras and merbeings, Coleman and Huyghe may be operating on the outer edges of plausibility, but even here their thinking is never less than original and provocative. This is a very good book, crisply written and difficult to put down once you've started reading it.
