The struggle for the soul of Europe today is every bit as dire and consequential as it was in the 1930s. Then, in Weimar, Germany, the center did not hold, and the light of civilization nearly went out. Today, the continent has entered yet another “Weimar moment.” Will Europeans rise to the challenge posed by radical Islam, or will they cave in once again to the extremists?

As an American living in Europe since 1998, Bruce Bawer has seen this problem up close. Across the continent—in Amsterdam, Oslo, Copenhagen, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Stockholm—he encountered large, rapidly expanding Muslim enclaves in which women were oppressed and abused, homosexuals persecuted and killed, “infidels” threatened and vilified, Jews demonized and attacked, barbaric traditions (such as honor killing and forced marriage) widely practiced, and freedom of speech and religion firmly repudiated.

The European political and media establishment turned a blind eye to all this, selling out women, Jews, gays, and democratic principles generally—even criminalizing free speech—in order to pacify the radical Islamists and preserve the illusion of multicultural harmony. The few heroic figures who dared to criticize Muslim extremists and speak up for true liberal values were systematically slandered as fascist bigots. Witnessing the disgraceful reaction of Europe’s elites to 9/11, to the terrorist attacks on Madrid, Beslan, and London, and to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Bawer concluded that Europe was heading inexorably down a path to cultural suicide.

Europe's Muslim communities are powder kegs, brimming with an alienation born of the immigrants’ deep antagonism toward an infidel society that rejects them and compounded by misguided immigration policies that enforce their segregation and empower the extremists in their midst. The mounting crisis produced by these deeply perverse and irresponsible policies finally burst onto our television screens in October 2005, as Paris and other European cities erupted in flames.

WHILE EUROPE SLEPT is the story of one American’s experience in Europe before and after 9/11, and of his many arguments with Europeans about the dangers of militant Islam and America’s role in combating it. This brave and invaluable book—with its riveting combination of eye-opening reportage and blunt, incisive analysis—is essential reading for anyone concerned about the fate of Europe and what it portends for the United States.

Kenneth Ellman Reviews While Europe Slept by Bruce Bawer
    email:ke@kennethellman.com, Newton, New Jersey 07860

It may surprise many people but I first read a book by Bruce Bawer in 2010.What is more interesting is that when I speak to many intelligent ladies and fellows they also have not read Mr. Bawer. Certainly he is not as well known as some fictional writers who are so popular but in my opinion contribute nothing to the well being of the human animal. So much "literature" is written and sells well that really is nothing more that a distraction from living and to me has no value. Best Sellers indeed! Not to me. Now and then you will come across an author like Bruce Bawer who has an interesting life, a razor sharp perception and valuable information that you ignore at your peril. He also seems to have something that is unfortunately in short supply in this world, Courage. Particularly Courage of your convictions.

SO, I read While Europe Slept and like many of my favorite books which I have reviewed I read it twenty times or so over the couple of years it came to my attention. I still enjoy it. It is the story of cultural, legal and internal violence against Europe by Islamic thought and Islamic believers.
It is the story of the failure of Europe to understand, accept and meet this threat to its own people and way of life. This book is fast paced, rapidly taking you from one incident to another always with commentary offering the authors perspective. Contrary to the opinion of other reviewers I believe the incidents are sufficiently documented and described to confirm authenticity. Most dramatically the book brings into focus the Islamic attack upon a fundamental human right so long and painfully fought for and which any loss or diminishment of has consequences beyond predictability. That right is Freedom of Speech and of the Press. The violence and destruction brought into view by Mr. Bawer when viewed through his lens of the threat to Freedom of Speech and the Press brings the danger to our way of life as a fire to our face. This is not a political or religious question. It is a question of our self definition of what it means to be human and communicate and speak.

In order for me to accept a book as valuable it must have certain features such as being well written in the sense of communicating ideas clearly. While some of my scientific and medical books may require me to read a passage or sentence many times to fully understand it, because I am a slow learner, a book such as While Europe Slept should flow easily in the mind and be understandable on first read. Mr. Bawer has certainly done that and done it well.

While Europe Slept is a current event of how the civilization that we know of as Europe is allowing itself to be destroyed by fellow human beings who hate and despise it. Yes a little strange, but when a nation such as France or England or Germany etc., allows many new immigrants, legal and illegal to take up residence and yet reject, despise and hate their new country we should ask why? Adolf Hitler almost destroyed European Civilization and he was native born. But in the act of destruction by Hitler, Europe had to confront itself and its contradictions. At the end of World War 2, those issues and choices were settled and Europe survived. The United States had rescued Europe from itself. As the years went on Europe arose from the ashes of war to become a beacon of light again.

NOW, Europe is faced with the strange anomaly of destruction from within. It is strange not because of the damage caused by a foreign Islamic people who hate Europe, as that is just a part of life. What is strange is the apparent acquiescence of the European nations and people to their own internal end, an end of their language, law and cultural heritage. How could this be??
Bruce Bawer tells this timely story by a combination of his personal experience, his survey of news reports, and his analysis of what he perceives with his own eyes and hears. It rings true. He is a first class reporter and analyst of current events in Europe today.

As the author shows Europe is under attack and it is a overt violent confrontation with the ability of Europeans to function and live from day to day. There is no subtlety here. There is an obvious announcement and course of conduct to undermine and destroy the legal protections that define European Civilization and Western Civilization itself. The descriptions of Islamic cultural onslaught in Europe with full acquiescence of the governments and people of Europe cannot be disputed. Bruce Bawer gives insights into the European mind that are readily available to anyone who took the time and effort to look. But many of us did not and his book brings this confrontation with Islamic intolerance and hatred into clear focus with an overlay of the European mind and its self destructive behavior. Buy this book and learn.

Bruce Bawer's book is one of the most insight-packed I've ever read on a subject that pitifully few political pundits know anything about. Reading his book will give you a tremendous advantage from now on in screening and digesting anything you read or hear about European culture, sociology, politics, etc. Bawer's book gives you fascinating anecdote after anecdote about European anti-Americanism, multiculturism, Eurabia (not from academe, but where the rubber hits the road, or should I say "street," as in the now-ubiquitous phrase "the Arab street") and, of course, antisemitism.

But the greatest thing about this work is how much more one appreciates the good old USA upon reading yet page after page in this wonderful book. In his classic, Hawaii, James Michener explains that first generation Japanese-American children born in pre-WWII Hawaii were forced by their immigrant parents to go to "Japanese School" after public school (sort of like Hebrew School for Jewish kids). In Japanese School, pupils learned about Japanese language, culture, Japanese norms of conduct, lore and history. Half of what they were taught was Japanese politicial imperialism, superiority of Japanese ways, and other assorted old-world traditional "intolerant" and "xenophobic" ideas. The other half of what they learned was things like respect for parents and authority, honorable conduct, and self-discipline. According to Michener, the kids were able to unerringly filter out the racist and "un-American" crapola from the "good" teachings, mostly thanks to their American public school education, which gave them built-in filters to vet the bs from the "truth."

Thanks to Bawer's book, I now much better understand the implications of Michener's great insight into the American vs. the European model of acculturation of immigrants. Simply put, the Europeans are really screwed up. They are causing their own problems. They are nothing if self-destructive of their own civilization. Bawer gives you the details-and the devil is definitely in them.

Bawer's book supplied many missing pieces of my understanding of European vs. American civilization. The biggest piece is that America is a truly "Judeo-Christian" civilization and Europe is basically a "Greco-Christian" one. Americans, from the Founding Fathers up to its citizens present-day, by and large have always shown fealty to a Hebraicized God who cares about individuals and underdogs (like slaves, for example). The Europeans, in contrast, have always had to deal with the problem of their ever-present "inner pagan" (to borrow Franz Rosenzweig's most-trenchant observation) nature, thus their anti-Americanism and antisemitism. By the way, world antisemitism had been in a half-century remission since the Common Era began 2,000 years ago, the remission lasting from the first postwar death-camp newsreels to September 11, 2001 C.E. Since 9/11, as one sadly learns from Bawer's book, European antisemitism has returned to-or actually surpassed-its millenia-old full-strength.

This book is so well-written, so cogent, so thoughtfully argued that I would recommend our President and his foreign policy advisors read it and then invite the author to his Texas ranch for a half-day colloquy. Without doubt, it would be one of the best tutoring sessions Bush could ever get from an American patriot about the shockingly alien mindset of his European decisonmaker-colleagues.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2006
European societies are being subverted by radical Islamists and, according to this book, Europe's elite are fully complicit in this undermining of their own culture and civilisation.

From Madrid to Amsterdam, Oslo to Stockholm, London to Paris - right across the Continent, radical Islam is a powerfully growing force hell-bent on establishing a caliphate in Europe governed according to sharia law.

Unfortunately, after decades of being brainwashed with multi-cultural leftist ideology, secularism and political-correctness, Europeans are unable to acknowledge that radical Islam poses a threat to their way life.

Instead, being mired in the moral relativism of their decadent societies, Europeans can see little difference between what they call American `imperialism' and the Islamic `colonisation' taking place in their midst. Indeed, the inability of modern Europeans to discern truth from fantasy is one the most disturbing themes in Bawer's book which, when combined with the massive demographic shifts underway across Europe, suggests a very Islamic future for the Continent.

    An excellent read. Highly recommended.
