The Pathology of Power

“A disturbing look at the military state using evidence from committees of the Congress, whistle-blowers, and concerned citizens. . . .A thoughtful and chilling look at Fortress America, its architects and its victims.” ―Kirkus Reviews
In this book, a seasoned commentator on world affairs discusses the way power in government becomes enlarged, exploited, and institutionalized―not just as the result of external dangers, real or contrived, but as the result of the way the arms race spills over into and dominates foreign policy. The clandestine operation that led to the Iran-Contra affair, Norman Cousins observes, is a recent example of dangerous trend with its own momentum. Mr. Cousins returns here to the central theme that dominated the editorial pages of the Saturday Review during the thirty years of his editorship: the challenge to human freedom and safety represented by vast destructive power slipping away from the means of control.- ISBN-100393305414

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2023Among other things, this book is an account of how the vibrant and broad-based anti-war movement which followed the mindless carnage of World War I was systematically undermined by clever and industrious agents of the arms industry. There's a lot of money in making weapons and without wars, weapons tend to stack up. Cousins sheds a light on the legions of people who use their intelligence to promote mayhem so their paymasters can draw down their inventories and get the order forms full again.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2014Cousins is a superlative writer. Though his socialist bent casts a shadow across his powerful writing, truth as usual outs the cult.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018Though he did not specifically refer to political power Cousins revealed both the problems that power creates and suggested specific ways to address the abuse of power. My most cherished historical ideas are presented in the Declaration of Independence where the authors (a committee of 5) pointed out that the only true purpose of government is to secure natural rights. Cousins focuses on this at the end of the book and points out that government evolves in the direction of failure to secure natural rights...because of the opportunity presented by power itself. When it comes to war, hunger, international human problems and relations, he believed that human beings could create institutions which would require the nations of the world to adhere to Law.
